Each year has great shows, but 2017 was definitely no exception. The fall is usually jam packed with tours going all over North America after many bands finish with the summer festivals in Europe, and one of the tours that is currently going on is the co-headline tour between Trivium and Arch Enemy. Both bands released amazing new records this year. Arch Enemy with Will To Power and Trivium with The Sin & The Sentence. This monstrous co-headline bill with While She Sleeps and Fit For An Autopsy as support made a stop in Toronto at the Danforth Music Hall on November 7th. This package has proven to be a great success with several shows selling out in advance, including the Toronto show, which was the first show of the tour to sell out. It was a night of great bands, great music and a real powerful light show. Due to our interview with Corey Beaulieu of Trivium, we were unable to catch *Fit For An Autposy's set, so the first band we witnessed was While She Sleeps. The crowd showed the band a great reception and the band displayed great energy as they ran around all over the stage. Lawrence Taylor is quite the frontman. One of the stand out moments of their set was as they finished the last notes of the final song, Taylor jumped into the crowd and he crowdsurfed to the band's merch table at the back of the hall. I've never seen that before. It was now time for the first main event: Arch Enemy. It's been three years since I saw them last, which was when they were touring with Kreator in 2014, and tonight was my second time seeing them. Fans were primed as the band entered the stage, kicking off their set with "The World Is Yours". As always, not only was Alissa White-Gluz a powerhouse on stage, but easy on the eyes as well. The main focus of the set was the newer material from Will To Power and War Eternal like "The Race", "War Eternal", "Blood In The Water", "The Eagle Flies Alone", "You Will Know My Name" and "As The Pages Burn". Usually when bands perform more of their newer material as opposed to their old tunes, there tends to be some grumbles in the crowd, but because the fans have embraced Alissa with open arms ever since she came into the band three years ago, and they love the new material, there wasn't any grumbles. Many bands also enjoy playing the new stuff more as well because it's still fresh. At the same time though, Arch Enemy gave us a decent amount of oldies like "Dead Bury Their Dead", "Ravenous", "My Apocalypse", "We Will Rise" and "Nemesis". The guitar work between Michael Amott and Jeff Loomis was outstanding, and their tone was astonishing. Finally, finishing off the night was Trivium. The crowd roared as the lights went out and the band entered the stage, beginning their set with "The Sin & The Sentence". The amazing thing is that the song was just released three months ago, and it has already achieved the fan-favourite status. Honestly, Trivium just get better every time I see them. Matt Heafy really knows how to hype up a crowd. Both Corey Beaulieu and Paolo Gregoletto also displayed great energy with headbanging, jumping and running around the stage. With only twelve songs performed, we were given a healthy dose of new material like "Betrayer", "The Heart From Your Hate" and "Thrown Into The Fire" from the new record, as well as "Until The World Goes Cold" from the last record, as well as a respectable amount of old-school favourites like "Down From The Sky", "Strife", "Dusk Dismantled" and "Kirisute Gomen". A couple of nice old-school surprises were "Like Light To The Flies" and "Rain" because I haven't heard the band play these songs since the very first time I saw Trivium back in 2009. New drummer Alex Bent is just a machine. His ability to play technical parts so effortlessly is off the charts. He's like a young Gene Hoglan. To close off the night, "Capsizing The Sea" played on the P.A. as Matt told the entire floor section to kneel down, then jump up and unleash hell as the band kicks into "In Waves". Trivium delivered in spades as always and I look forward to next time. Do not miss this tour if it's hitting your city, or else you will really regret it. |
