Summer is here and we're now hitting the halfway point of 2016. On a warm Wednesday evening on the first day of June, fans gathered at the Mod Club to witness a great co-headline bill with Luca Turilli's Rhapsody and Primal Fear. I also recorded an interview with Primal Fear frontman Ralf Scheepers before the show, which went great. Thank you Ralf for a great interview. Kicking off the night were hometown favourites and 2015 Wacken Metal Battle Canada champions Vesperia, who warmed up the crowd with their brand of epic melodic death metal. I'm glad that I finally got to see them perform after missing them the last few times they played. They displayed great energy on stage with their heavy tunes and incredible chops. Casey Elliott's hair was flying everywhere from the stage fan blowing into him as he headbanged to the destructive riffs. Aside from Morgan Rider's brutal gutterals, he, Casey and Frankie Caracci all gave some majestic vocal harmonies. Vesperia gave an incredibly tight performance. You can tell that they take performing well extremely seriously. The band kicked off their set with "Knightrider Of Doom". Alessandro Conti does a great job singing all the classic Rhapsody tunes like "Land Of Immortals", "Unholy Warcry", "Pride Of The Tyrant" and "Dawn Of Victory". Luca Turilli was an absolute live wire on stage with swift movements across the stage as he delivered those majestic riffs and solos. Guitar, bass and drums all had solos. Drummer Alex Landenburg entertained the crowd with a drum solo of the Game Of Thrones theme, which played on the P.A as he played. He was also very animated throughout the set with constant twirls and flips of his sticks. Dominique Leurquin and Patrice Guers later entertained us with guitar and bass solos. The band also played the song "Demonheart" from Turilli's solo album Prophet Of The Last Eclipse as well as "Rosenkreuz", "Prometheus" and "Il cigno nero" from their new album Prometheus, Symphonia Ignis Divinus. The encore began with "Quantum X" playing on the P.A and the band closed their set with "Emerald Sword", leaving fans satisfied to the fullest. | Journalist: Alex Stojanovic Photographer: Navneet Johal @ The Mod Club June 1, 2016 Toronto, ON, Canada (C) 2016 All rights reserved by www.metalmasterkingdom.com Photos: Navneet Johal Next up was Primal Fear. After being a big fan of the band for a while, I'm glad that I finally got to see them. I swear, it's so hard not to put them in comparison with Judas Priest because they're so similar in terms of sound, and Ralf Scheepers vocals and on-stage mannerism is so similar to Rob Halford. The band entered the stage and slammed into "Final Embrace", riling the crowd into a frenzy, followed by the speed metal attack of "In Metal We Trust". We were treated to several cuts from the new album Rulebreaker like the title track, "Angels Of Mercy", "The Sky Is Burning" and "The End Is Near". When it comes to having fun with the audience or doing an audience check, Ralf would ask the audience to scream "Hellyeah", but each attempt got longer and the last attempt headed into high note territory. It was pretty funny to hear the crowd attempt the high note all at once. The sweet and heavy riffs from Alex Beyrodt and Tom Naumann got heads banging and people jumping. Other fan favourites the band performed included "Sign Of Fear", "Angel In Black", "Nuclear Fire", "When Death Comes Knocking", "Chainbreaker" and "Metal Is Forever". Being that it was the last night of the tour, both bands took the time to thank each crew member for their work and every member of each band got an introduction. Mat Sinner stated that we had a competition with the Quebec audience from the previous night for loudest crowd, and they also bought the last bunch of the band's merchandise and in order for us to beat them, we had to make a LOT of noise for Ralf's introduction. The band closed their epic set with "Rollercoaster" and "Running In The Dust". (C) 2016 All rights reserved by www.metalmasterkingdom.com Photos: Navneet Johal |
