Horrendous kicked off the night's festivities with some progressive death metal, and really got the crowd wamed up for what was to come throughout the rest of the night. They took the stage to a fairly large crowd. Their intricate compositions was one of the elements that stood out about them as I heard some odd time signatures in their songs. Their six-song set included "The Stranger", "Ripped To Shreds", "Polaris", Siderea", Nepenthe" and "Ozymandias. They began their set with "Internal Bleeding", followed by a combination of "Chopped In Half / Turned Inside Out". John Tardy didn't interact with the crowd very much except for introducing certain songs. However, his signature vocals are still as brutal as ever. The guitar tones from Ken Andrews and Trevor Peres were absolutely crushing, making the riffs even heavier, which I could not help but smile at as I headbanged. Some of the new material the band touched on included "Sentence Day", "Ten Thousand Ways To Die" and "A Lesson In Vengeance" off the new self-titled record, as well as "Visions In My Head" from Inked In Blood. For the final third of their set, they returned to the old-school side of things with "'Til Death", "Don't Care" and they ended with "Slowly We Rot". Spring is here and I think I can speak for everyone in Toronto, it sure feels good to have the warmer weather coming back after what felt like an eternity of cold weather. April 11th was an interesting night in Toronto as there was quite a bit going on. There was the Blue Jays home opener (which they lost against the Milwaukee Brewers), Bon Jovi was in town, but also in town was the annual Decibel Magazine tour at the Opera House, which I think had its best lineup this year with headliners Kreator and special guests Obituary, Midnight and Horrendous. This lineup resulted in an amazing show that was on the verge of being sold out, so the Opera House was packed to the gills. Let's get into what went down! (C)2017 All rights reserved by www.metalmasterkingdom.com Photo: Rob Botten Midnight was up next, who walked out on stage in reaper hoods. I can honestly say that they had the most entertaining set. I mean, how do you top a band coming out on stage, then smashing a guitar, then throwing the pieces out into the audience, and then kicking into the song? You can tell that the band's biggest influence was Motorhead because the songs sounded very Motorhead-esque, Athenar's vocals sounded very much like Lemmy's with a little bit of Cronos from Venom, and he sang into the mic with it facing down. Songs the band touched on include "Vomit Queens", "Satanic Royalty", "Black Rock 'n Roll" and "Endless Slut" just to name a few. One of the best moments of their set that had me and a lot of people laughing hysterically was when they changed the name of "You Can't Stop Steel" to "You Can't Stop Semen", which honestly sounds more like a Steel Panther song title. The only issue about the band's set was that all the songs sounded relatively the same. As the band finished the last notes of the last song, guitarist Commandor snapped all his strings off his guitar before leaving the stage. I've seen them a couple of times before, but I honestly think that this was the best Kreator show I've seen. Everything from the setlist, to the stage set, to the light show, it was perfect. To start things off, Iron Maiden' s "Run To The Hills" played on the P.A warming up the crowd who sang along to the whole song, followed by "Choir Of The Damned" playing as the band entered the stage and began the set with "Hordes Of Chaos", which got the mosh pit going right away. The biggest focus of the set was the new record Gods Of Violence as the band played 5 songs from the record like "Satan Is Real", "World War Now", "Gods Of Violence", "Hail To The Hordes" and "Fallen Brother". My only criticism about the show was that a little hard to hear Sami Yli-Sirnio's guitar during the solo sections. Aside from this minor flaw, |
The encore began with "Violent Revolution" and was followed by what is a trademark moment in the Kreator set, which is the raising of the "Flag Of Hate". Like always, Mille Petrozza gave the crowd three attempts to scream "Hate" loudly before kicking into the song. This was followed by "Under The Guillotine" and they closed with "Pleasure To Kill". When it comes to the latter two songs, it blows my mind that they can still execute the songs at the same warp-speed tempo that the songs were initially recorded at 30 years ago. Overall, it was an incredible show with four awesome bands and a great way to spend a Tuesday night!
