The only opening band for the night, Sick Of It All, took the stage with fervor. The four piece, formed in Queens, New York in 1986, played the same way they would have several years back. Age not being a problem, their energetic vocalist Lou Koller, and his brother, guitarist Pete Koller, demonstrated impeccable showmanship, electrifying the audience with hardcore riffs, constant stage motion, and endless chanting. Mid-set, the band shared a laugh with the audience over their generation’s age, and proceeded to play the first song they ever wrote. Near the closing of the hour, Lou arranged the audience into a Wall of Death setup, asserting that they were the ones that “invented this shit” to the fans. In agreement, the audience followed instructions and created what has been the largest in-club Wall of Death I’ve seen to date. Finally, the band hyped us for Suicidal Tendencies, and departed the stage. It's been quite a while since Suicidal Tendencies last played Toronto, so fans looked forward to getting "Cyco" again. SICK OF IT ALL (C) 2018 www.metalmasterkingdom.com Photo credit: Rob Botten Having interviewed Dean Pleasants before the show, I waited in anticipation for Suicidal Tendencies to begin their set. Also knowing that Ben Weinman from Dillinger Escape Plan took over on guitar mid-tour, I was keen to see the result of such a bold (yet risky) move. When the band took the stage, they came with even more energy than the opening act, sending dedicated fans into a moshing frenzy. Weinman blended in with the band extravagantly well, jumping from amplifiers while playing with perfection – and Pleasants' blues-infused solos layered so seemingly over such brash musicality. Bassist Ra Diaz, demonstrated his skill through an exceptional solo, and backed up Mike Muir’s vocals and between-song motivational speeches with his vocals. As the pit continued to grow up until the closing song, we were truly praying in “The Church Of Suicidal”. |
