As people are well aware, Frampton has been battling Inclusion-Body Mytosis (IBM), which has affected the muscles in one leg. As a result, he thought that he was done performing. However, here we are in 2024, and he's still touring and performing. The fact that he has the willpower to continue doing what he loves despite battling the disease is worthy of all the respect and admiration in the world. He still has the soul and drive to play, however he just performs seated now. Given that he's still performing, the tour was aptly dubbed the Never Ever Say Never Tour!
The show began with his backing band all entering the stage first, followed by the man himself. Walking on stage with the assistance of a cain, he sat himself down, strapped on his guitar and kicked off the set with "Golden Goose". The 2+ hour set consisted of many songs from his solo career, including many extended versions of some of the songs that were heard on Frampton Comes Alive. Each time he used the talkbox, it was quite the moment, especially that we were witnessing the inventor using it. His speeches in between songs were heartfelt, funny, sometimes emotional and inspirational all at the same time. Given that he was also nominated to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame (what took you so long?), he gave the audience the opportunity to cast their votes in the moment on their phones.
Some of the songs that he touched on included "Lying", "I Got My Eyes On You", "Show Me The Way", "I Wanna Go To The Sun" and "Do You Feel Like We Do". He also treated the crowd to the Humble Pie track "Shine On", as well as covers like an instrumental version of "Black Hole Sun", Nickolas Ashford's "I Don't Need No Doctor" and the set closed with The Beatles' "While My Guiitar Gently Weeps". As the band took a bow, he assured the crowd that he would continue to fight his health issue so that he can continue performing as long as he still can, and that was met with thunderous applause. From a performance perspective, it's incredible that he is in his mid-70s, and he's still playing and sounding like he's in his 30s.
In conclusion, seeing Peter Frampton for the first time was a unique experience. There's no question that we will be seeing him again when we get the chance. From a musician's standpoint, seeing players who are incredibly passionate about not only playing, but putting on a high quality performance is one of the ultimate sources of inspiration, and Frampton is one of those guys. Godspeed to you Peter! May you continue to perform for many more years!
