On a cold Wednesday night, what seemed like the line of eternity, Nightwish fans circled Victoria Street down to Yonge Street, well past Queen Street. It was a mixed crowd of young people, older middle-aged people, and even families with small children, but only about half wore black heavy metal shirts. Fortunately once the doors opened at 7PM, the line moved quickly and efficiently. Rows of red seats sloping downward on each level of Massey Hall filled quickly. As the show began, the stage was lit with a bright countdown clock. Eager fans loudly counted down the numbers. At last, the glorious owl of the Oceanborn album cover art appeared, along with Troy and his flutes and pipes for a gentle instrumental snippet of “Swanheart”. Then Floor, Marco, Emppu and Tuomas made their grand entrance, jolting the crowd with power chords, and high notes of the Century Child album classic – “End Of All Hope”. The entire audience got up from their seats, flashing their horns and singing along.
Excited screams filled the air as the screen was enveloped with a desolate stone angel; cover art of the 2004 album Once. Fans jumped and screamed along to “Wish I had An Angel”. The two-hour performance covered hits across Nightwish’s entire discography, spanning over 20 years and inciting a variety of emotions from the audience, from the solemn grief of “Dead Boy’s Poem”, to the energetic jumping commotion of “I Want My Tears Back”. The backdrop was projected with mesmerizing images throughout the performance. From a haunting yellow eyed wolf baying at a full moon creating the feral atmosphere of “Sacrament Of Wilderness”, to the flying buildings and pouring rain demonstrating a sense of longing for “Nemo”. The night ended with songs “Ghost Love Score” and “The Greatest Show On Earth”. Fascinating images of sea creatures, DNA strands, and ancient texts accompanied the brilliant keyboard melodies, powerful riffs and Floor’s beautiful voice.
