First on stage was the Melodic Goth Metal band Mortalfall, with the talented singer Anastasia Utoplova. Their sound is very much their own combining a mixture of melodic keyboards, clean vocals and guttural back ups. With songs involving dark and deep themes, they got the night started by rocking the first set. A little taste of holiday cheer was even added as keyboardist Martin Drozd stylishly wore a festive Santa hat. These guys really took the night away with their music, stage performance and humour. All members aside from vocalist Jon Doyle wore nothing but kilts and seemed all too happy to play. Their set was full of smiles, jokes, with their long swinging in the air. They finished off with both guitarists and bassist doing a little synchronized number; feet stomping and guitars being raised into their air vertically. Although numbers were low and one band was unable to make it out, the show maintained an amazing atmosphere of energy. The four bands played their hearts out each putting on their own great performance, and some even added a little humour here and there. Maple Metal Records’ presented and absolutely stellar small venue show that was enjoyed by all till the last few remaining audience members at the end. Andrew Fullerton utilized a great mixture of guttural and occasional clean vocals setting the mood for each song that could make you rock out and headbang song to song. Ryan Martin maintained some impressive vocal work, but the highlight of the set was Josh Billard on bass and vocals. His energy was bar none the best all night as he continued to rock out on his extended-range 6-string bass. These guys did such a great job they were cheered on the play a song for an encore. Poor weather and a small crowd aside, this was a show to remember. Passion for music was seen throughout the night from the intricate range of bands. Maple Metal Records proved that Ontario has a powerhouse of bands to be discovered and that smaller venue shows have quite a lot to offer. |
