With the release of their new album, The Blood of the Gods, GWAR prepared a tour filled with blood, guts and other bodily fluids as well as a hearty dose of metal. Opening the show were Ghoul and Doyle, who prepared fans by getting them nice and riled up as everyone prepared to sacrifice to their Lords and Masters. You can tell it’s a GWAR show because venues will thrive to spare their precious equipment by covering everything with garbage bags and tarps while metal fans will spruce up their wardrobe by wearing white. As a personal tradition, my concert partner and I dressed up in white unicorn onesies, because what better offering to the Scumdogs of the universe is there than a fuzzy unicorn? While we pranced around, GWAR hit the stage in full throttle with “War on GWAR” from the new album. Without hesitation, victims were sacrificed and the crowd was spewed with a healthy dose of blood much to their delight. I decided to observe for the first few songs while I fueled up and preserved the pristine whiteness of my costume. Though the next track, “Hail, Genocide!” tempted me to run up into the pit, I refrained and simply chanted the frenzy inducing chorus of “Genocide, genocide. Hail! Hail!” along with the crowd. It was the fourth song of the night, “Saddam a Go-Go” where my concert partners and I simply could not resist charging down into the pit to enjoy the groovalicious tune in its full glory. I do wish I could see a video of unicorns rushing the stage only to be met with blood-drenched frenzied fans moshing and singing. GWAR expertly executed an epic show with battles between Scumdogs egged on by Blothar, to sacrificing Donald Trump (an obvious crowd pleaser) after a short sumo wrestling match, as well as the myriad of monsters, robots and villains that end up spewing bodily fluids all over the crowd. The perfect ratio of fan favourites to new songs were played and we got to chant out the lyrics of “Viking Death Machine”, “Bring Back the Bomb”, “Meat Sandwich” and “Fuck This Place”. After GWAR retreated off the stage, fans demanded more songs as well as more blood and were gifted with an encore including an AC/DC cover of the very appropriate “If You Want Blood.” |
