To add to this amazing list, Norwegian black metal titans Dimmu Borgir, celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary this year, set a date at the Danforth Music Hall for their only Canadian stop out of only four North American locations for this year. Toronto metal fans were long overdue for their live fix of some of the most epic black metal the world has ever seen. To make this night even better, special guests: local black metal favourites Panzerfaust, put on one of their best performances I’ve ever seen. Without question, this show is in my top five concerts of all time. Panzerfaust, a band I’ve seen about five times now, who seems to continuously step up their performance each time, put on their best show yet. Vocalist Goliath came up on stage debuting a new mask and threw, from what I could tell was mud, out of a bucket and into the crowd. He then stood at the front end of the stage towering over the crowd as their hard and brutal sound began to fill the concert hall. For nearly a 50-minute set, Panzerfaust played as hard as I have ever seen them play, not giving a moment’s break between songs and speaking not a single word to the crowd. It felt as though we were looking at some sort of evil ritual with their dimly lit stage, candles, and constant flashing lights. Right before Dimmu Borgir came up on stage, it was clear many fans here in Toronto have been waiting a long time for their return. Eonian, their tenth album has recently been released after eight years since Abrahadabra, and a nearly equally long wait for fans of the black metal powerhouse to return. With chants of their name and constant cheers, you could feel the excitement in the air, then as the lights dimmed and the stage went black, the anxious crowed erupted into cheers. The hairs on my neck began to stand up as all members made their way onto stage and broke into the first song from Eonian, “The Unveiling.” Dimmu Borgir mixed things up quite a bit by playing a selection of songs from Eonian, as well as many well-known favourites from their previous albums. Concertgoers went especially crazy when the group began “Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse”. Their whole set was as immersive as it could have been with bright colours and incredibly thick stage fog. The night seemed to end as soon as it began, the crowd kept cheering for more, but it was clear twelve songs was all we were going to get. I don’t think a single person in the crowd was even remotely upset about that after what we all just witnessed. Since the moment this show was announced, I was anticipating this incredible night on a constant. Did it live up to my expectations? Absolutely. I do wish we could have heard a few more songs but, frontman Shagrath told Toronto fans that Dimmu Borgir will return. All I can say about that is I am already anxiously waiting for their next stop in Toronto. As for Panzerfaust, man, are those guys ever kicking some ass. There’s something about them that just makes your hairs stand on end whether you’re seeing them live listening to them recorded. What a night! |
