Why? Because Bodom. Because old-school Children Of Bodom. Because Carach Angren, Lost Society & Uncured. |

Sporting face-paint, exquisite props, and exceptional musicality, the Dutch symphonic black metal band did the genre justice. Supporting their latest album, Dance & Laugh Among The Rotten, they brought aggressive speed and an enticing atmosphere to the Phoenix. Masters of horror and mayhem, Seregor, Ardek, and Wijers continued their never-faltering streak of immaculate live performance backed by wicked tracks and eye-dropping stage work. Supporting their third studio album, Braindead, the Finnish band brought fire to the stage. After their big-break on “Global Battle Of The Bands”, news of their magnificence spread. With band-founder Samy Elbanna as their front-man, they embarked on their first North American tour – bringing thrash metal and a want-to-mosh-but-can’t-resist-watching-them energy to our concert halls. Song after song, the mosh-pit grew with newly found fans. By the end of their set, Lost Society had the attention of all metal-heads, from the front-and-center head-bangers to the distant onlookers, when they re-enacted Slipknot’s kneel-and-jump – and as I jumped, I established myself as an official Lost Society fan. To kick off their 20 Years Down & Dirty tour, Children Of Bodom opened with “Deadnight Warrior” – sticking true to their promise not to play anything newer than “Hate Crew Deathroll”. When they played that song towards the end of their set, the crowd went ballistic – there’s something refreshing about a band playing what they know you want to hear (and dedicating a whole tour to it). The Finnish titans came back for their encore with “The Nail” and “Towards Dead End” – giving us two more songs to revel at (and participate in) one of the largest pits opened at the Phoenix. As the band parted with the stage, we hoped for twenty more years of Children Of Bodom. |
