It has come to our surprise that Testament have announced that they have parted ways with bassist Greg Christian once again, and have announced that his replacement would be former bassist Steve Di Giorgio. Greg was Testament’s original bassist, who joined the band in 1983, and played on Testament’s first six studio albums, The Legacy (1987), The New Order (1988), Practice What You Preach (1989), Souls Of Black (1990), The Ritual (1992) and Low (1994), then departed from the band in 1996 following a club tour, and was replaced by bassist Derrick Ramirez after a temporary disbandment. Ramirez played on the band’s album Demonic (1997), but departed in 1998. Steve Di Giorgio then joined the band and recorded with the band on The Gathering (1999) and First Strike Still Deadly (2001). |
Following Chuck’s cancer recovery, the original lineup of Chuck Billy, Eric Peterson, Alex Skolnick, Greg Christian and Louie Clemente came together for a reunion tour in 2005. The original lineup (with the exception of Louie) then moved forward, releasing their first studio album in 9 years The Formation Of Damnation (2008), and touring relentlessly for 4 years in support of the album, then releasing the follow-up album Dark Roots Of Earth (2012), and once again hit the road hard in support of the album. Come January 13, 2014, it was announced that the band have parted ways with Greg once again, which came as a shock to many fans, but the announcement of Steve Di Giorgio returning to the band came as a breath of fresh air to many fans.
I had the privilege of meeting Greg when Testament came through Toronto in 2012 with Anthrax and Death Angel, and I had a great chat with him and got a pic taken with him. He is such a class act and a humble guy.
It is sad to see Greg go because he is a phenomenal bass player and one of my favourites, but we all wish Greg the very best in the future. Steve Di Giorgio will be participating with the band on their upcoming shows in Australia, Japan and Mexico City, as well as take part in the new Testament album, tentatively due this year.
