Blog author: Alex Stojanovic The surprising death of Gwar’s Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie) this past March was one of the biggest losses to the metal world, and this past Friday (August 15th), the late Gwar frontman’s costume was set ablaze in a Viking funeral pyre on the water. This is the second memorial to remember the singer, as the was a private memorial held on April Fool’s Day, and the second memorial was held this past Friday at Gwar’s annual Gwar-B-Q festival at Hadad’s Lake in Richmond, Virginia. Among the musicians that showed up was Lamb Of God’s Randy Blythe, who was a close friend of the singer, and gave a speech at the memorial. Speaking about the memorial, Randy said: |
“Watching my friend Dave’s costume go up in flames in front of a thousand fans was so much more intense for me than the private memorial for friends and family we had on April Fool’s Day."
"I spoke at both of them and both times were sad. But watching his alter ego burn tore me up way more than the first memorial. Maybe because there was Dave, the human and my friend who just left us; and then there was Oderus, who was something else entirely. To watch his stage gear burn was like watching part of my life go up in flames. It was a super-intense moment – very beautiful, but overwhelming. Fly free, Oderus - you are missed.”
Just looking at the pic gives me goosebumps. To all of Dave Brockie's family, friends and fans, my heart goes out to you.
