Heafy blew out his voice while on tour in 2014 and had to get his voice back in shape. With coaching from Ron Anderson, who has coached people like M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Chris Cornell, Janet Jackson and Axl Rose, Heafy came to find out that he was screaming the improper way all along and his voice was on the brink of destruction. With many patient hours of practice and training on both his melodic voice and his screaming, he's sounding better than ever now in both vocal territories and anyone who has seen Trivium live from 2015 onwards can notice the difference. Heafy's clean vocals have reached new heights over the last few years and his vocals have become easily identifiable. Vengeance Falls and Silence In The Snow saw the band start to move in a slightly more mainstream direction. They're both great albums in their own way, but I will admit that the Disturbed influence in the former was a little too much and I love Disturbed, while the latter felt like it was missing this energy in the music. It's a really well-composed album and I'm not one of those people that's mad that there's no screaming, but the music was lacking energy.
However, just a few days ago, they have released a new song called "The Sin & The Sentence" and it has gotten all of us old-school Trivium fans incredibly hyped. Upon first listen to this track, I had to change my pants. The track encompasses all the primary ingredients from their past albums into one cohesive song. There's the screams and the drums from Ascendancy, the thrash from The Crusade, the epic vibe from Shogun, the blast beats used on In Waves and the great clean vocals from Vengenace Falls and Silence In The Snow. For the most part, the song seems like a return to the roots and that mostly has to do with the energy brought by new drummer Alex Bent, who has played with Battlecross and Dragonlord and even played in Testament for a few shows. The blast beats are placed perfectly and not just making their presence known randomly and excessively. It seems that after a few years of going through drummers like socks, they've finally found the right drummer. Towards the end of the track, we hear Trivium at what is possibly their heaviest with thrashy riffs and Heafy's screams closing out this 6 minute gem.
If this is an indication of where the next record is going direction-wise, we are in for a seriously heavy treat. Will this new album dethrone Shogun as the best Trivium album? That remains to be seen, but we'll find out soon enough. I also must say that I wouldn't be surprised if "The Sin & The Sentence" ends up being the title of the album, but we'll see. Keep your eyes open for details on the next record and be sure to catch Trivium on tour this fall with Arch Enemy, While She Sleeps and Fit For An Autopsy. See dates down below.
