It also truly turned out to be Ozzy's farewell to the world before he sadly passed just two weeks after the show. Soundgarden were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee also announced that they would be going back out on tour in 2026 to celebrate Rush's music and Neil Peart's legacy, with Anika Nilles performing drums on the tour. People should not mistake this as the new Rush because it's merely a celebration and not a brand new lineup that will continue to make new records.

As per usual, let's take a moment to pay homage to all the talents, both musical and non-musical, that we unfortunately lost this year. It goes without saying that a couple of the most notable losses this year were undoubtedly Ozzy and Ace Frehley, but other notable losses include John Sykes, Coburn Pharr, Les Binks, Sly Stone, Brian Wilson, Brian Montana, David Lynch, Marianne Faithful, Rick Derringer, Val Kilmer, George Foreman, Michelle Trachtenberg, Gene Hackman, Pope Francis, Ted Kotcheff, Joan Plowright, Graham Greene, Brent Hinds, Julian McMahon, Rob and Michele Reiner and Sam Rivers just to name a few.

This year, much like 2023, didn't feature a whole lot of music that grabbed and shook me at my core and made me feel was worthy of being on my Top 10. As a result, I'm putting together a Top 8 for this year. Here's to hoping that 2026 will feature many more records that will shake me much like in years past.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/wrath-ruin_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Known for touching on historic events within their lyrics, we see Warbringer include some modern relevance, like the vision we all share with John Kevill on the world being a perfect place, but knowing that it's not possible, which can be heard on "A Better World". However, there's also burners like "The Sword & The Cross" (best track on the record), "Neuromancer", "Through A Glass, Darkly", and "The Last Of My Kind", all of which feature Warbringer at their finest to date.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/published/march-of-the-unheard.jpg?1765836747" style="margin-top: 5px; However, there are very few supergroups that become legitimate standalone bands and make a name for themselves. One of those is The Halo Effect, the band featuring all former members of In Flames. After releasing their strong debut album Days Of The Lost in 2022, and doing a few tours around the planet as both a support act and a headliner, it was clear that this was a band that was going to have some pretty real legs, and a follow-up album presented itself this year with March Of The Unheard, which continues where Days Of The Lost left off. Let's be honest, would you rather learn about history by reading through the textbooks, or listening to metal? It's obvious. In pure Sabaton fashion, they bring to musical life the stories of legendary figures like Joan Of Arc, the Knights Templar, Vlad The Impaler, Napoleon and Julius Caeser. With Adam returning fully to the band, the fans that sat out the band's albums released with Matt on vocals were going to be turning out in droves, and did they ever, because their new album Alienation is the band's finest offering since One X. Combining the best elements from both singers' respective eras, it offers something for everyone. We get the rockers and heavy crunchers and more emotional ballads, with some songs even giving little subtle nods to some of the band's classic songs. If you were to tell me in 2006 when One X came out that Adam was going to leave the band in 2013, and then come back in 2024 and share vocal duties with his successor, I would've called you batshit crazy, but here we are with just that, and it's undoubtedly the best version of Three Days Grace the world's ever seen. On top of celebrating the past with the 20th anniversary of Ascendancy and touring with Bullet For My Valentine on the Poisoned Ascendancy Tour, the band are also looking towards the future, and they released their first taste of new music since In The Court Of The Dragon in 2021 with the 3-song EP Struck Dead. The EP will serve as an appetizer for what will be the band's eleventh studio album, which can be expected in late 2026 or early 2027, according to the band. Struck Dead has all the ingredients that defined the last 8 years of the band's recording history all compacted in 3 songs, and is a great indication of what to expect next. Crown. With an overwhelmingly positive reception to that record, the band seem to have finally hit their stride after many records, and that stride continued on the band's new album Unatoned. The focus on this album was shorter songs, which are more direct-to-the-point rather than overexplaining to get the point across. With the longest song on this album reaching just over 5 minutes, each song has a nice flow and doesn't drag on for too long. I know that certain fans of some of the band's big epics from The Blackening and Unto The Locust might not be into the shorter running songs, but what people need to understand is that shorter songs tend to hit as hard as the long epics.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/para-bellum_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Now, it's not because they're my favourite band of all time, but simply because the material they manage to create is just that good. If there was another band that I felt released a stronger album, I would've put that band's album higher. Even though we ended up having to wait five years for a new album since Titans Of Creation, the wait was more than worth it, as it always is with the Bay Area thrash masters. While it doesn't surpass the quality of Dark Roots Of Earth, the eclecticism is on even greater display here than it was on Titans Of Creation. Combining thrash with the extreme elements from black metal on songs like "For The Love Of Pain", "Infanticide A.I." and "Witch Hunt" to the orchestral elements on the amazing ballad "Meant To Be", Testament show their hunger to push the boundaries even further, and the fact that they are still churning out material this strong at this point in their career, it's proof that the masters still have what it takes and are still schooling the young blood on how it's really done, and it definitely has a lot to do with Chris Dovas, who is only 27, for kicking the band into high gear. Back, but that's about it, honestly. Normally, if I can pick 10 or more releases that stuck out, then it's worthy to make a list.

However, while we're here, let's reflect on a few standout events from 2023 that we missed. Some key moments include Marty Friedman performing with Megadeth in Japan and at Wacken Open Air for the first time in 23 years, the tornado that affected the Morbid Angel concert in Illinois, Dream Theater announced the return of Mike Portnoy after 13 years, Slipknot parted ways with Jay Weinberg and brought in Eloy Casagrande, and Kiss concluded their career after 50 years with two nights at Madison Square Garden.

Now, while we're still on the subject of 2023, let's take a moment to pay tribute to all the great musical and non-musical talents we lost last year, with the notable losses being Gordon Lightfoot, Tina Turner, Lisa Marie Presley, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Buffet, Tony Bennett, Sinead O' Connor, Sebastian Marino, Jim Durkin, David Crosby, Josua Madsen, Wayne Swinny, Andy Rourke, Wayne Shorter, Kirk Arrington, Bernie Marsden, Robbie Robertson, Steve Riley and Charlie Dominici just to name a few, while some of the non-musical losses of 2023 include Matthew Perry, Sir Michael Gambon, Bob Barker and Jerry Springer. R.I.P. to all the talents we lost in 2023.

Coming back to the present moment in 2024, as far as some of the big music stories of 2024 go, some standout moments (both good and bad) include the reformation of Slayer for some festival appearances, which is more respectable for a reunion rather than becoming a touring entity again. There was also Sepultura announcing their farewell tour, Gojira's historic performance at the summer Olympics, Linkin Park coming back from inactivity with a new album, singer and tour, the Jane's Addiction on-stage meltdown, which caused the band to end their tour abruptly and enter an indefinite hiatus, the drama with As I Lay Dying surrounding the whole band leaving and making it quite obvious that the problem was Tim Lambesis (no surprise), the Three Days Grace reunion with Adam Gontier, while Matt Walst remains in place, making the band a quintet, and of course Nicko McBrain retiring from touring with Iron Maiden after 42 years.

Let's now take a moment to pay tribute to those talents that we lost this year. 2024 saw the unfortunate losses of James Kottak, Jerry Abbott (Dimebag and Vinnie's dad), C.J Snare, Robin George, Jon Wysocki, Peter Collins, Toby Keith, Jack Russell, Paul Di'Anno, Dave Allison, Bob Bryar, Liam Payne, Quincy Jones and Zakir Hussain, just to name a few. Some of the non-musical talents that we lost this year include Bernard Hill, Carl Weathers, Richard Simmons, Morgan Spurlock, Shannen Doherty, Dame Maggie Smith and James Earl Jones just to name a few. R.I.P. to all the great talents we lost in 2024.

Anyways, here is my first top 10 list since 2022. Once again, these are just MY personal picks, so no need to get all huffy if you don't see your favourite album on here. I hope you enjoy going over my 10 picks of 2024!

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/merciless_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; The last two albums: Carnivore and Bloodlust were some of the band's most well-received ever, and their long-awaited new effort Merciless continues in the same vein of those two albums. Despite how you might feel about Ice-T's straightforward potty-mouth lyrics, you can't help but feel and resonate with the anger emanating through him, especially if you share the same feelings as he does with the topics he tackles. I mean, song titles like "Drug Lords", "Lying Motherfucka" and "Fuck What You Heard" are pretty self-explanatory. The band have also got another A-list round of special guests like Corpsegrinder, Joe Bad, Howard Jones and Max Cavalera. The move to also cover "Comfortably Numb" and give it that Body Count twist was also a big one. Now, I don't normally listen to rap metal, but Body Count is one of those types of bands that will always have my attention.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/i-want-blood_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; While still containing the many elements that has made the AIC sound so recognizable, including the haunting and mesmerizing vocal harmonies, slow-paced chunky and doomy riffs, this is definitely a darker album and even heavier in some areas. There are definitely some songs that feel like rejected AIC cuts from the DuVall era, but then again, that's Jerry's style, and that's not a bad thing. Unlike Kerry King's solo album, Jerry combines familiarity with some elements you wouldn't expect to hear in AIC. Take notes Kerry, this is how you properly make a solo effort while still staying mainly in your comfort zone, as opposed to making another continuation of your main band.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/wake-up-the-wicked_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; The German wolves, aka: Powerwolf, returned in 2024 with their ninth studio album Wake Up The Wicked. Having established their signature sound all the way back since Return In Bloodred, their sound continues to resonate with fans across the globe who enjoy their epic style of mythological storytelling. The priests of the holy heavy metal mass continue to serve up salvos of captivating hooks and mesmerizing sing-alongs that will swallow up any festival or stadium crowd, as confirmed with songs like 'Bless 'Em With The Blade", "1589", "Thunderpriest", "Wake Up The Wicked" and "Sinners Of The Seven Seas". If you're a Powerwolf fan, you obviously can't expect any surprises, but if you're new to Powerwolf, and this is your introduction to them, you are in for a ride!

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/supernatural_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; You could feel that glimmer of hope emenating from their pop-infused arena rock sound that was necessary for the rather depressing period we were living in at the time. Since their last album So Close To Heaven, they had a vocalist change with Lars Safsund stepping down and handing the microphone over to Alexander Strandell of Art Nation. At first, I wasn't sure how it would sound with a new vocalist because I'm a huge fan of Lars' voice, but from the first listen of their new album Supernatural, I had nothing to worry about. Guitarist and main songwriter Stefano Lionetti certainly knows how to craft captivating songs all while picking outstanding musicians to help bring his vision to life. The album contains very strong Journey vibes, and it contains the songs Neal Schon wishes he wrote for the Freedom album.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/heaven-x-hell_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; That being said, Sum 41 announced in 2024 that they're saying goodbye after 27 years together (I'm not convinced because we all know the story about farewells). It might be their final "tour", but I highly doubt it's the end of the band itself. I'm sure they will do one-offs down the road, but we'll see what happens. Anyway, their latest and final album Heaven x Hell is a double album with 20 songs split into two, with the first disc (Heaven) being a return to their earlier pop-punk roots, and the second disc (Hell) continuing with the more metallic direction that has become more prominent in their sound over the last 20 years. It feels like the perfect amalgamation of All Killer No Filler, Does This Look Infected, Chuck and Order In Decline. These guys were huge for me when I was in middle school in the mid-2000s, and I'm still as much of a fan as I was then, and always will be. Although the biggest change with this album is that it's the first one not to feature original guitarist Paul Quinn, having been replaced by the legendary Brian Tatler of Diamond Head, this is still very much a full-on Saxon album packed with the punch of the heavy metal thunder that the band have defined themselves with for 4.5 decades, and to hear that thunder still rumbling on after this many years shows that there's a magic to Saxon that just cannot be diminished. When you hear tracks like the title track, "Madame Guillotine", "Fire & Steel", "Pirates Of The Airwaves", "There's Something In Roswell" and "Super Charger", and the ageless vocals of Biff Byford, you would not believe that this is an album coming from a bunch of guys in their 60s and 70s.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/published/profane-prayer.jpg?1737404020" style="margin-top: 5px; However, their brand new release Profane Prayer has managed to reignite my interest. The addition of new elements like clean vocals and more slower and brooding riffs and melodies in addition to all the traditional thrash elements that Suicidal Angels have fiddled with since the beginning of their career, makes Profane Prayer a standout in the band's discography. Production-wise, it's their sharpest and beefiest sounding album to date, and that also played a role in bringing back my interest. With songs like "When The Lions Die", "Deathstalker", "Profane Prayer", "Return Of The Reaper", "Virtues Of Destruction" and "The Fire Paths Of Fate", you can hear the maturity in their writing, as well as the familiarity of the past all combined into one.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/published/death-melodies.jpg?1737404181" style="margin-top: 5px; With the band now having original rhythm section of Bullet For My Valentine, they seem more stable now than they've ever been. This resulted in their first-ever shows and tours, as well as the release of their sophomore album Death Melodies, which picks up where The Sinner left off. There's nothing drastically different between the two albums. It's just another strong collection of songs by a band that knows its strengths. Tracks like "Hear You Scream", "Bleeding", "Scapegoat", "Ghost Of Yesterday" and "Suicidal" are just some of the absolute gems packed into this second serving of goodness from the British/American titans.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/megalomanium-ii_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; There's very few of those out there, but the most famous examples are Metallica with Load and Reload, and Guns N' Roses with the Use Your Illusion albums. Now, Eclipse have joined those ranks with two volumes of their latest album Megalomanium. The first edition came out last year, and the second one came out this year. While I felt that the first volume was more of a slow burner for me, the second volume was a smasher right out of the gate with songs like "The Spark", "Falling To My Knees", "All I Want", "Still My Hero", "Until The War Is Over" and probably the best song on the whole album "One In A Million". This has been one of the main albums that has been on repeat for me since its release. I will say that it actually came really really close to taking the top spot in my list this year.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/invincible-shield_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Celebrating an entire half-century this year since Rocka Rolla came out. the metal gods are showing no signs of slowing down. It's been said many times and Richie Faulkner played a significant role in injecting new life into the band when he joined in 2011. While Redeemer Of Souls featured great songwriting and playing, the muddy production killed much of the vibe. Firepower had the production quality Redeemer should've had, and that continued on Invincible Shield. Featuring some more progressive vibes compared to its predecessors, you can pretty much say it's one of their more technically challenging efforts while still maintaining tons of musicality and hooks. It was amazing to see shows and all mass gatherings return, and to feel that weight of a ton of bricks being lifted off our shoulders. First off, as we always do, let's look back at some of the key moments that stood out during the year. First off, as we always do, let's do some reflection with some of the key moments that stood out this year.

As far as the notable stories that happened this year go, probably the biggest story was Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown teaming up with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante for a bunch of Pantera tribute shows. However, I guess for publcity purposes and ticket sales, it was announced that it would be under the Pantera name, which definitely got a lot of mixed reactions. The way I see it is that it's a tribute and not a full-blown reunion as most people and media are making it out to be. It's obviously not going to be same without the Abbott brothers. The guys have said that it's a tribute tour, and that's how it should be. Plus, the fact that they got the blessing from the Abbott estate pretty much says everything. If Phil, Rex, Charlie and Zakk started doing this without their permission, we would've been hearing about a lawsuit by now. It should be treated as a tribute, because that's what it really is at the end of the day.

Another big moment was earlier in the year when Testament announced the return of Dave Lombardo to the drum throne after they amicably parted ways with Gene Hoglan. The announcement got all us Testament fans incredibly excited, as there's no need to describe how loved Lombardo is by everybody. Mick Mars also announced his retirement from touring due to his ongoing battle with ankylosing spondylitis, which means that after years of performing live with the original lineup, Motley Crue will be reverting back to performing live with 3 original members for the first time since the early 2000s, with John 5 taking Mick's place.

The other notable moment was after 25 years of eligibility, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, but instead of being inducted as Performers like they should've been, they were inducted for Musical Excellence. The other thing that made this a notable moment was that it was the first time since 2009 that they performed with K.K. Downing, and Les Binks also performed with the band. Either way, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is still a joke.

Now, as we also always do before we kick off the festivities, let's take a moment to remember all the fallen heroes that we lost this year, both in and out of music. Some of the most notable musical losses include Meat Loaf, Taylor Hawkins and Olivia Newton-John, but there was also Jon Zazula (Jonny Z), Alan White, Fredrik Johansson, Trevor Strnad, Alec John Such, Andy Fletcher, Steve Grimmett, Gord Kirchin, Dan McCafferty, and Christine McVie, just to name a few. Some of the biggest non-musical losses include Howard Hesseman, Nichelle Nichols, Gilbert Gottfried, Ivan Reitman, Bob Saget, Estelle Harris, Robbie Coltrane, David Warner and Ray Liotta just to name a few. R.I.P to all the great talents we lost this year.

While we're still on the subject of losses from this year, I also want to give a mention to a loss that us in the local Toronto scene experienced, which is Walter Froebrich. Pretty much everyone in the local Toronto scene knew Walter as a frequent face at shows. I personally didn't know him well enough to call him a friend, and I don't really have any stories about him to share, but we knew each other more as acquaintances. Either way, my condolences go out to everyone who knew him, and may he rest in peace.

Now normally, when it comes to picking our Top 10 albums for each year, it's normally really difficult due to the high volume of great albums that came out during the year, but this year seemed a little bit easier at least for me, because there were obviously lots of great albums, but there weren't really enough to the point where I was struggling to pick 10 as well as a few honourable mentions. Either way, I hope you enjoy my selection down below.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/rashomon_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; His long awaited black metal album Rashomon, under the moniker Ibaraki, is a black metal album for the ages. The more Heafy grew as a musician and a person, he started to break away from the traditions of black metal, and incorporate elements and directions that would make the most staunch black metal purist have a conniption fit. including a guest appearance from Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance, who did black metal vocals on the track "Ronin", and crushed it in the process. With this creative freedom, the sky is the limit for what could come with new Ibaraki music. Given how immersed Matt is with his Japanese heritage, it should be no surprise that all the song titles are in Japanese as well, and the band name Ibaraki refers to a Japanese demon from feudal legend.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/the-god-machine_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; While some may consider their long-awaited orchestral album Legacy Of The Dark Lands, which came out in 2019, as a studio album, Hansi Kursch was the only band member to perform on it, so I personally wouldn't consider it an official Blind Guardian studio album, but more as a side release under the Blind Guardian moniker. At the same time, old-school fans have been clamoring for an album that goes back to their thrash/speed metal roots, and the band delivered on all fronts with The God Machine, which is definitely the heaviest Blind Guardian album since Imaginations From The Other Side. It's safe to say that frustrations from the pandemic, and some of the more personal things the band members have gone through over the last couple of years, particularly Hansi Kursch dealing with the loss of his mother, bled their way into the album, resulting in more aggressive and faster songs. At the same time, the band didn't forget about the epic elements they became known for over the last 20 years.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/omens_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; However, since they released their self-titled album during the height of the pandemic and didn't have the chance to properly do shows to support it until a year later when touring came back even with restrictions still in place, it seemed like a no-brainer to already write a new album. Now, nobody was expecting a new album that soon from Lamb Of God, so it was quite the surprise when they announced the release of Omens. While I still stand behind my opinion that "Nevermore" was more on the weak side for an opener, and could've switched places with "Vanishing" or the title track, Omens is another solid release from one of NWOAM's leaders. If I may also add, it has the best production of any Lamb Of God album to date.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/the-sick-the-dying-the-dead_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; The Dead. With all the setbacks they experienced in the last six years, it can kind of be considered a comeback album, though not fully. That being said, album #16 for the thrash legends proves that even the most deadly setback (cancer) isn't enough to stop them. Does it top Dystopia? Hell no. However, with such strong tracks like "Life In Hell", "Nightstalkers", "Dogs Of Chernobyl" and "We'll Be Back", it's proof that there's still plenty of musical life and intensity in Dave Mustaine and the crew, and with Kiko Loureiro, James Lomenzo and Dirk Verbeuren in the lineup, we can only imagine what intensity is to come next. I just kind of wish that the drums had some more punch to them, then it would've been ranked a little higher.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/divisive_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; It was obviously a one-time thing, because the band's long-awaited eighth album Divisive is a return to their heavier, hard-rocking roots. I personally am also glad that they didn't go back to Kevin Churko for production duties, because I am not a fan of that guy's production style, as he makes records sound way too computerized. While there may be a little bit of trappings of that sound on this record, it's not as severe, as you can hear glimpses of the production from the first five records, which feels like a more in-your-face attack. The duet with Ann Wilson on "Don't Tell Me" is one of the album's standout moments, because the voices of Ann and David Draiman together is something that must be heard, because it's truly goosebump-inducing. listen to Sabaton. I found that I've learned more about WWI and other historic events by listening to Sabaton than I ever did by reading books in history class in high school. Since WWI has so many stories to tell, Sabaton followed up The Great War with another collection of songs related to WWI with The War To End All Wars. Honestly, they can continue making albums based on WWI, and not run out of topics to talk about. If you were to ask me which of the two WWI-themed Sabaton albums would I prefer, I would easily go with The War To End All Wars. It contains the better collection of songs, and is more consistent than The Great War.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/animalistic_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Since the release of Second Coming in 2018, many people were wondering whether there would be another album from the two melodic hard rock masters. However, Ronnie's ongoing stage 4 cancer battle became a guessing game for a while, but the man is making the best use of the time he still has on earth with as many recording projects, including a couple of solo albums and a new Nordic Union album. Marking their first release with new bassist Frederic LeClercq, known for his time in DragonForce, Kreator sounds like they went back to basics a little bit with the inclusion of a bit more thrash while still maintaining the epic, melodic elements that were really prevalent on their records since Violent Revolution. Now Hate Uber Alles doesn't come anywhere near the level of quality experienced on Phantom Antichrist and Gods Of Violence, which are two Kreator albums in a class of their own, but I think it really stacks up with Enemy Of God and Hordes Of Chaos. Fantastic guitar work from Mille Petrozza and Sami Yli-Sirnio, and shredding drums from Ventor, as well as strong songs like the title track, "Killer Of Jesus", "Strongest Of The Strong", "Conquer & With Matt Alston on drums (although not on the album) and Vogg from Decapitated on guitar joining Robb Flynn and Jared MacEachern for the new chapter, Machine Head seems reborn on Of Kingdom & Yeah, surprise! I started to take a big liking to the Aussie lads in Parkway Drive over the last 3 years. I was really impressed with their last two albums: Ire and Reverence, as it's where they really started to hone their songwriting skills, and they continued that with their new album Darker Still. You can compare listening to Darker Still and Reverence in particular to watching Lord Of The Rings, because those movies were so meticulously crafted, and they have the ability to have you invested in every little bit of detail that is shown and heard, even if they are 3+ hours long. That's what I felt with listening to these two albums in particular, because not only were they so brilliantly produced, but the songs themselves were crafted with so much care and passion, it shows that the band care about what they put together. You can feel that care and passion in songs like "Ground Zero", "Glitch", "The Greatest Fear" and "Imperial Heretic", but especially the title track. These songs were built for arenas. It's no wonder why Winston McCall has hyped up Jeff Ling as one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. There's so much more to great songwriting than playing fast and technical riffs with heavy breakdowns, and ripping your throat out vocally (even with proper screaming technique), and that's something that the old Parkway fans and most metal fans in general seem to be oblivious to. I know it's all opinionated, but some people need a serious dose of a reality check. With the albums since Ire, the songs had much more depth compared to any of the songs on the first four records. Despite the one song that was a dud: "If A God Can Bleed", if this album was a school project, it deserves and A+ marking. I cannot wait to see where Parkway Drive go from here.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS (No Order)

<td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:33.333333333333%; However, as its been said a million times by now, that Alice In Chains seemed the most metal of all the grunge bands, with Soundgarden being second. When Facelift came out in 1990, it took a while for it to catch on, but the band broke when they toured with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax on Clash Of The Titans. Facelift made such a splash on the scene when "Man In The Box" broke after that tour, and it gave birth to several of the band's other signature tunes like "We Die Young", "Bleed The Freak" and "Sea Of Sorrow". While the Big Four were already riding high with the releases of their signature albums in the mid-80s, and the thrash scene was already exploding, Testament were quickly becoming the leaders of the second wave of thrash bands. They may not have reached Big Four levels in terms of success, but that doesn't diminish the mark that Testament made with The Legacy .

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/blizzard-of-ozz_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; In the span of seven short years from 2005-2012, they released six albums. Primo Victoria already earned them a respectable following, but it was at the start of the 2010s that they started to take off and build a name for themselves across the globe. Starting with Coat Of Arms in 2010, the momentum continued with their sixth album, the fan-favourite better known as Carolus Rex. With the album giving birth to some of their best-known songs such as "The Lion From The North", "Carolus Rex" and "Gott Mit Uns", it's clear why this is a fan-favourite in the band's discography.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/fire-from-the-sky_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Their last album was Fire From The Sky, and who knows whether this will officially be their last studio album or not. If it is, then Fire From The Sky is a great way to close out a recording chapter. 2009's Retribution was a tough album to follow, but they managed to follow it up with an equally brilliant album with quality songs such as "The Unknown", "Divide & Conquer", "Nothing Remains", "Fire From The Sky" and "Blind Faith". With the hugely positive reception that record got from both critics, fans and other bands, Accept thought it would be a good idea to keep the momentum going, and follow up the album rather quickly, which they did with their 2012 album Stalingrad, and it picks up where Blood Of The Nations left off. This album is easily a no-brainer for 2012, especially with songs such as the title track, "Hung, Drawn & Quartered" and "Shadow Soldiers". When a band is able to release such a strong album one year, and then follow it up with another highly strong album not even two years later, that shows you the strength that Accept had with their new lineup at the time.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/clockwork-angels_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; For Rush, it was unknown at the time that Clockwork Angels would turn out to be the band's final album, but as the years went on, it became more evident that that would be the case, and then it turned out to be true, both with the announcement of their retirement in 2018, and the tragic passing of Neil Peart in 2020. While Snakes & Arrows served as an homage to more of the early 80s era of the band, Clockwork Angels seemed to serve more as an homage to the 70s with the more riff-oriented stuff that they were known for back then. Given how amazingly "The Garden" is written, and how it serves as the band's swansong, there's no way to listen to that song nowadays and keep a dry eye. It was Neil's passing that gave the listening experience of that song a whole new meaning. However, nobody really expected them to follow it up so quickly in 2012 with Spiritual Genocide. However, the band intended to do that to mark their 30th anniversary at the time. It certainly marked a change in production style because the production was more raw and gritty as opposed to the last few albums, which featured more polished and punishing production. However, being that the guys in Destruction are always thinking old-school, it was really no surprise as to why they decided to go the raw and gritty route for this album.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/the-electric-age_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Overkill began their period of rejuvenation in 2010 with the release of Ironbound, which was a high-quality album, and followed it up with The Electric Age, which seems to be even better than Ironbound, especially with tracks like "Electric Rattlesnake", "Drop The Hammer Down", "Good Night", "Old Wounds, New Scars" and so on. "Wish You Were Dead" has without a doubt one of the best screams not just by Bobby Blitz, but in metal as a whole. We dare anyone to try and not get goosebumps when you hear him unleash that blood-curdling scream. Another definite no-brainer for 2012, especially if you're into death metal. The production may be a tad bit on the muddy side with the distortion levels on the guitars being set way too high, causing the drums to be buried in the background most of the time (blame that on Erik Rutan), this is another feast of death metal goodness with tracks like "Demented Aggression", "Encased In Concrete", "Scourge Of Iron", "As Deep As The Knife Will Go", "Rabid", and "Followed Home Then Killed". They released two of their strongest and most well-received studio albums in this decade alone with Phantom Antichrist in 2012 and Gods Of Violence in 2017. Phantom Antichrist was one of those albums people could not stop raving about when it was released, and rightfully so. It saw the band tour for 4 years behind it before they moved on to the next chapter. Mille Petrozza has always been one of the most underrated riff masters and songwriters. When you take the riffs he wrote on this album, and combine them with the monstrous production, courtesy of the great Jens Bogren, you have a recipe for some quality metal. With tracks like "Phantom Antichrist", "From Flood Into Fire", "Death To The World", "United In Hate", "Your Heaven, My Hell" and "Victory Will Come", there's no question as to why this album is one of the strongest in Kreator's discography, and why it was so raved about, and still is to this day.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/dark-roots-of-earth_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; It already won the #1 spot on our 2010s Thrash Albums list, so that was also an easy indicator. As I've mentioned many times about this album; the levels of quality that are on display in these songs are astronomical. When you talk about albums that are remarkably tough to beat, this is definitely one of them. Testament have since released two more amazing studio albums since then, but neither of them have ever come close to the level of brilliance displayed on Dark Roots Of Earth. The variety is just one of the key elements that makes this album stand out. You have the incredibly thrashy tracks such as "Rise Up", "True American Hate" and "Last Stand For Independence", the more groove-oriented numbers such as "Native Blood", "Man Kills Mankind", "A Day In The Death" and "Throne Of Thorns" and the more melodic numbers like "Cold Embrace" and "Dark Roots Of Earth". It goes without saying that "Cold Embrace" is not just one of the strongest tracks on the album, but one of the strongest ballads and songs that Testament has written in their entire career. The album was also the band's most commercially successful album, with it reaching #12 in the U.S and Canada, #1 in Hungary, #4 in Finland and Germany, #8 in Poland and Sweden, and #9 on the World charts. For an album that heavy to chart that high is a massive accomplishment. It's a testament (pun obviously intended) to the strength of the band as musicians and songwriters, and the strength of the metal community as a whole for their support.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

<td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:33.333333333333%; However, in comparison to 2020, things seem to be slightly different and a lot more forward looking, which is a lot better than what we had before.

Just like every year, there were a handful of events and stories to be told, both good and bad. Some of them include:

1. Iced Earth guitarist and primary songwriter Jon Schaffer being arrested and having assault and weapon charges pressed against him after his participation in the US Capitol Invasion early in the year, leaving an uncertain future for the band.

2. Exodus drummer Tom Hunting and his battle with stomach cancer in which he successfully beat

3. Megadeth bassist David Ellefson getting caught cheating on video and being dismissed by Dave Mustaine shortly after that scandal escalated, followed by Ellefson joining a new band The Lucid later on. Even though I think that what he did was despicable and vile, I feel bad for him at the same time because he had his privacy invaded. Regardless, I’ll always respect him as a musician.

Also, let’s take the time to acknowledge the fallen heroes that we lost this year. Some of them include Joey Jordison, Dusty Hill, Marsha Zazula, Tawny Kitaen, Mike Howe and Charlie Watts just to name a few. A couple of the biggest non musical deaths that happened this year was Larry King.

Having said that, let’s get down to some of this years releases, as 2021, just like 2020, had a lot of good albums that were released. I really had a tough time choosing the ones I liked the most, so here’s my top 10 albums of 2021 along with some honorable mentions! Enjoy!

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/hell-unleashed_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; It also marks a new start for the band with Ol Drake taking the role of the frontman, left behind by his brother Matt Drake last year, and with Adam Smith of RipTide on rhythm guitar. After giving it a listen, I guess it’s safe to say that it felt right to return to basics and bring forth a straightforward pure thrash metal album, similar to what they did with their debut album Enter The Grave back in 2007, since it’s a new beginning for them after all. This is by no means their best album to date. However, this is an album that contains all things that every die hard thrasher craves: fast riffs, aggressive vocals, face-melting solos and some blazing drum beats. Although Hell Unleashed wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, it certainly was one of the year’s heaviest albums and an awesome welcome back for one of the most loved bands from the new wave of thrash movement.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/leave-a-scar_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Musically, there’s not much of a difference between this one and the previous one. The only difference I found, which I think is a good one and pretty significant at that, is Dee’s involvement in the songwriting process this time, unlike the previous album which had Jamey Jasta and the backing band handling all the songwriting. As much as "I Gotta Rock (Again)" may have been good musically, I personally found that it didn’t really do much for me in terms of songwriting, but some other memorable tracks include "All Or Nothing More", Before I Go", "Silent Battles" and "The Reckoning". Dee’s voice is also in top notch condition, letting people know that the fire in him still burns strong.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/the-nightmare-of-being_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; This album is definitely a big step up from their 2018 release, To Drink From The Night Itself from a musical aspect, as they had really subverted my expectations, as they included some proggy elements here, most notably on the track “The Fall Into Time", while still maintaining that 90s Swedish death metal sound that they’ve always been known for. Although I do feel that they went a little overkill with the orchestral part later on in the song than they did in the beginning of it. Tomas Lindberg even does some spoken word poetry in the track "Cosmic Pessimism", which I thought was kind of peculiar and very unexpected. When you think of a band such as At The Gates, that’s certainly not the first thing that comes to mind. Even though I feel like the prog elements and spoken word didn’t really go hand in hand with a band such as At The Gates, this is a fairly decent record overall, and I’m glad they stepped out of their comfort zone here and tried something new.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/dealin-death_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Death. It’s as if these guys were stuck in a time capsule since this mid 80s or so and are now being brought out into the open for everyone to hear. For starters, I gotta say, they couldn’t have come up with a better way to start off the album with "Danger Is Imminent", an acoustic intro with some syth involved, followed up with "Malicious Souls" with that high pitched scream. I mean, come on, it doesn’t get any better than that! While there’s plenty of that thrashy and aggressive riffage all over the place, the most memorable moments of this album are rooted more in the mid tempo grooves and parts of the album that have a more melodic approach. An example of that would be in the track "Gorgon". Some other bangers off this record include the title track, "Multitudes Of Terror" and "Count Your Blessings", even though I feel like they went a little off the rails with the ending for the latter track. Even though Dealin’ Death may not be as fast and aggressive as the previous two albums prior, this is a well balanced album of speed and thrash, so if you dig bands such as Agent Steel, Razor and Exciter, I would highly recommend giving Vulture a listen.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/necro-sapiens_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; This year, they released their third studio album Necro-Sapiens, and I must say, this record is an absolute BEAST (pun fully intended). This album really showcases a lot more versatility, not to mention the the amount of groove they used in songs such as towers of suffocation. As good as the guitars were in a lot of parts, I feel like more leads/solos would have given the songs a little more punch to them. With tracks such as the title track, Genesis", "Abattoir", "Czar" and "Meathook Massacre", this is a well put together album overall that is rooted in that old school death metal sound, while having that modern edge to it at the same time.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/call-of-the-wild_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Now when it comes down to a new Powewolf album, especially if you’ve been a longtime fan of theirs, never expect any surprises. The only expectation to have really is nothing more than a slew of great anthemic power metal that is bound to get any music venue or festival crowd singing along while raising their glasses/bottles/cans, and tracks such as "Faster Than The Flame", "Dancing With The Dead", "Beast Of Gevaudan", "Blood For Blood", "Sermon Of Swords" and "Glaubenskraft" are proof of that. Having only been around since the 2000s, Powerwolf have made a name for themselves, and having done so, they have earned their place among the ranks of the big names of German power metal, such as Blind Guardian, Helloween and Gamma Ray.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/blood-in-the-water_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Jetsam decided to put out their new release Blood In The Water, making it their 14th studio album. While The End Of Chaos was quite impressive to say in the least, Blood In The Water just hits like a bolt of lightning. Ken Mary’s drumming is just as good as it gets here, followed by some killer riffs and face melting solos from Michael Gilbert and Steve Conley. All the songs really stood out on this record, but the one that really got my attention the most was "Cry For The Dead", mainly due to Eric A.K Knutson showcasing a little more of what he’s capable of in terms of cleans (man those are some pipes!) and having a good sense of dynamics as a whole. Overall, this album is powerful, rich, heavy and driving with a lot of substance, and one that keeps on growing with every track from start to finish.

<img src="https://www.metalmasterkingdom.com/uploads/9/4/4/4/9444732/angelus-apatrida_orig.jpg" style="margin-top: 5px; Angelus Apatrida is another band I don’t hear of often and are criminally overlooked for the most part. The Spanish thrashers are back at tit this year with their self-titled seventh studio album, since their 2018 release Cabaret De La Guillotine. This album is tightly packed, condensed and very cohesive. The track "Indoctrinate" is a very good start to the album, followed up with "Bleed The Crown", which has a lot more groove to it, giving off that Testament, Sepultura, Exhorder, Pantera kind of vibe, as does the album as a whole. Some other cool tracks include "Rise Or Fall", "Disposable Liberty", "Through The Glass" and "We Stand Alone". This is an album that has an old school feel to it, but still remains very modern sounding. What really stood out for me on this record was the punch in the guitar tones with some of the most melodic and face melting solos that give off that NWOBHM sound of some degree, and of course, the aggressive vocals that the band has been known for having, and are kind of the glue as to what holds the songs together as well, apart from the guitars. However, I feel like the drums kind of lacked the aggression that the previous record had, and had extensive use of the cymbals at times on this one. Musically, this is a straightforward in-your-face thrash album, so it really gives a lot of hardcore thrashers what they would expect on an album. However, I was hoping for a little more experimentation like they did on Cabaret De La Guillotine, most notably in the track "Farewell", that had a very ballad-esque approach in parts of the song while still maintaining aggression. Regardless, this is a pretty good album. It’s heavy, melodic, and Angelus Apatrida are becoming a really serious group in this day and age, getting better at what they do.

02. EXODUS - Persona Non Grata

It’s been a hot minute since the Exodus put out any new material; 7 years to be exact. The long wait for Persona Non Grata is finally over, and it certainly did not betray any expectations. Ever since they reunited with vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza and released their album Blood In, Blood Out in 2014, Exodus have relentlessly toured around the globe with Heathen guitarist, Kragen Lum who filled in for Gary Holt while he was out there filling his touring commitments with Slayer before the band called it a day in 2019. Another delay surrounding the release of Persona Non Grata was Tom Hunting’s battle with stomach cancer in which he successfully beat. Zetro seems to be a lot more comfortable in terms of range on this album in comparison to the previous one, granted that Blood In, Blood Out was great in its own right, and Gary Holt and Lee Altus have more punch in their guitar tones this time, giving the result of some really menacing sounding riffs. As always, Exodus are a band that you can never go wrong with. This is a fantastic album overall and easily a no brainer for 2021.

01. TRIVIUM - In The Court Of The Dragon

Quite possibly their best record in the trilogy of albums Trivium has put out with former Battlecross drummer Alex Bent on drums. When I first heard the title track, I just knew this was gonna be another kickass album, and sure enough, I was right! What I didn’t know however, was whether or not this was gonna make #1 or #2 on the list; turns out it won first place, and here’s why: 1. There are many moments on this album that have a strong resemblance of Shogun (their best album to date), one of them being that the last track "The Phalanx" was actually written during the Shogun sessions back in the late 2000s, so that gives it some authenticity of it’s resemblance of that era. 2. When you have other tracks such as the title track like I mentioned above, "Feast Of Fire", Like A Sword Over Damocles", "A Crisis Of Revelation", "The Shadow Of The Abattoir", and "Fall Into Your Hands", there really shouldn’t be any further explanation as to how this album made it to the top of my list. Bottom line, Trivium have been on a streak of releasing some of the best material of their career ever since they welcomed Alex Bent into the fold and released The Sin & The Sentence in 2017, and have lived up to their previous albums like Ember To Inferno, Ascendancy, The Crusade, Shogun and even In Waves, but Shogun however, still remains unbeatable to this day.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

 <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:33.333333333333%;
