Blog author: Alex Stojanovic Back in November, Chris Broderick and Shawn Drover shocked the world by announcing their departures from Megadeth just hours apart from each other. Nobody saw this coming. After they announced the departures, people were speculating that Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson would reunite with Marty Friedman and Nick Menza. We later learned that they did meet with Nick and Marty at this year's NAMM show, however Marty stated that he didn't want to be a part of it, but Nick came pretty close to rejoining the band, and there's video footage of him rehearsing with Mustaine and Ellefson, but it didn't work out in the end. The last Megadeth lineup was my favourite, but I'll always be a fan regardless of the lineup. |
A few days after their departures, Chris and Shawn announced that they have started a new band together. That got me excited, knowing that we would still hear music from the two of them. The band was later named Act Of Defiance, and they will release their debut album Birth & The Burial on August 21st on Metal Blade Records. The lineup is rounded out by Chris on guitar, Shawn on drums, Henry Derek Bonner (ex-Scar The Martyr) on vocals, and Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall) on bass. When the band name and label were announced, they released a short teaser of a demo version of the song "Throwback" to get people excited and give people an idea of what was to come from Act Of Defiance. Just a few days ago, they released "Throwback" as the album's first official single with a music video, which you can watch below, and all I can say is that it's a beast of a tune.
While the music has been getting really positive feedback, Henry's vocals seem to be getting mixed reviews from fans. I think his screaming vocals are really well done, as well as his melodic vocals. His melodic vocals add a dash of darkness in the chorus. Chris' rampaging and crushing riffs have the ability to get heads banging and people moshing, and "Throwback" is definitely a song for mosh pits. His solo however, I would say isn't all that different from the solos he played in Megadeth. This is also the most aggressive I've heard Shawn sound on the drums since the track "1,320" on Megadeth's Endgame album.
Just from all the clues that Chris and Shawn have given about what we can expect while making the record, I think we are in for a heavy treat with Birth & The Burial. Let us know what you thought of the track.
