Written by Alex Stojanovic Being of Serbian background, I love the fact that countries like Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia all have great metal scenes with lots of fans and some great bands. Slovenia would probably contain the biggest scene due to the fact that it's home to the Metaldays Festival. Recently, Croatian hard rock/metal outfit What Lies Beyond reached out to us for a review of their new track "Bitter Truth" from their new album Coup De Grace. The band hails from Solin, Croatia. I will admit that it's hard to find some good modern metal bands these days because there's a lot of monotony among the modern bands. It's gotten to the point that when you see the label "modern hard rock/metal", you kind of know what to expect. As far as the song goes, the vocal melodies from Ivan Šipić are captivating and the chorus is pretty uplifting, all backed by some catchy melodic riffs and leads from Filip Samardžić and Ante Katinac. While the performances were great and the band is certainly talented, I wouldn't call the song impressive. It's not bad, but it's nothing special. This type of metal isn't something I listen to too much these days, but there's still some bands of this type that I do enjoy listening to. If you're a fan of bands like Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, Black Veil Brides and All That Remains, check out What Lies Beyond.
