While listening to The Existential Reversal, which opens with "Flesh Candle", the production and main riff immediately drew me in. Straightforward heaviness and brutality aren't the only things the band focus on, as they also bring in enough melody to even things out, especially in the solos, which combine technical shred, but also soulful melodic playing. One thing that stands out with the songs is that they have hills and valleys rather than one consistent path, and that also has to do with the vocals. Even though the vocals are consistent with screaming all the way through the EP, they're still diverse with different pitches, and "Flesh Candle" is a perfect combination of all these elements.
"Spoils Of Decimation" brings more of a thrash element with fast and aggressive riffing going throughout most of the track, but it gets a little slower in the middle during the breakdown and the solo section, but things ramp up in speed again towards the end. "Feast Upon Death's Failure", the EP's closer and the longest song here, reaching at just over 7 minutes, is an overall slower track with some more melodic elements, but the brutality doesn't diminish. My favourite part about this track aside from the great riffing, is actually the guitar solos, especially when the two guitars harmonize together. The thrash element returns for brief stints during the middle solo and towards the end, but like I said, the track overall is a little slower, and I'm not saying that's bad.
In conclusion, Tyrant really showcase their musicianship and songwriting skills on The Existential Reversal, and it leaves the listener wanting more. If this EP is an indication of where they will be going next, whether it's another EP or a full-length, we are in for some really tasty metal. Quality over quantity is always the best way to go, and Tyrant have succeeded in delivering some quality material. I'm looking forward to seeing what the band has coming next.
