It has been a few years since the legendary Steve Lukather has released a solo album. His last album Transition was in 2013. Since then, he put out two new studio albums with Toto, which will also be the last, those being Toto XIV in 2015 and Old Is New in 2018, and the band embarked on their 40th anniversary tour dubbed 40 Trips Around The Sun before eventually going on hiatus once again in 2019. Last year, he gave a taste of the new solo music he had coming with the single "Run To Me", which featured his Toto bandmate Joseph Williams on guest vocals, and Ringo Starr on drums. The track is a tribute to the rock 'n roll sound of the 60s, and you can read our review of it here. Also in 2020, he and Joseph announced a brand new Toto lineup, and that they would be embarking on the Dogz Of Oz Tour when touring becomes a possibility again after the current insanity with the pandemic. Now, he has also released his long-awaited new solo album I Found The Sun Again, which features five originals and three covers.
For this record, he once again has an impressive lineup of backing musicians laying down the tracks, including drum legend Gregg Bissonette, keyboardist Jeff Babko, bassists Jorgen Carlsson and John Pierce, and his former Toto bandmate and longtime friend David Paich on piano and organ. The record starts off with the energetic "Along For The Ride", and is followed by the slightly more groovy "Serpent Soul". When we get to the first cover, which is Traffic's "The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys", we enter a more soft rock and jazz vibe. The addition of guitar in place of the horn section from the original version gives the song a bit more punch, but that doesn't take anything away from the original. The other bright spot is "Run To Me", which pays tribute to 60s rock. It's without a doubt the most memorable song on the entire album, and also the shortest.
The downside of the album is that the three slower tracks, like the title track, the instrumental track "Journey Through", and the closing Robin Trower cover of "Bridge Of Sighs" could've been trimmed down in length to make them stand out a bit more. The Traffic cover is the longest song on here, and it's a slower one as well, but that one contains hooks that managed to hold my attention. All in all, I Found The Sun Again isn't a home run, but it's an enjoyable record from one of the most prolific and well-respected studio musicians and guitarists of all time.
