Some of the songs on Missa Cantorem are songs that have already been sung by other singers, such as "Resurrection By Erection" done by Battle Beast, "Kiss Of The Cobra King" done by Caliban, and "We Drink Your Blood" done by Saltatio Mortis. This time, "Kiss Of The Cobra King" was sung by Chris Harms of Lord Of The Lost, "We Drink Your Blood" was sung by Johannes Eckerstrom of Avatar, and "Resurrection By Erection" was sung by Christopher Bowes of Alestorm. The funny thing regarding "Nightside Of Siberia" is that when I reviewed The Sacrament Of Sin, I mentioned that that song would be right at home in the Amon Amarth catalog, so when I saw that the song was included on this album, and that Johan Hegg was singing it, I immediately started laughing. That being said, I'm glad I wasn't out to lunch when I had that thought in my head.
Some of the highlights inlcude "Sanctified With Dynamite", "Nightside Of Siberia" and "Fist By Fist (Sacrilize Or Strike)". Of course, there were a couple of tracks that didn't quite hit the bulls-eye. A prime example is "Demons Are A Girl's Best Friend" with Alissa White-Gluz. As great of a growler as Alissa is, I found that her growl didn't suit the song. I feel that these songs in particular call for a melodic voice with some grit. The only one that seemed to work best with a growling voice was "Nightside Of Siberia". I'm already looking forward to hearing the next edition of Powerwolf tunes sung by different voices, whether it's songs that have already been done, or even some deeper cuts, because as I mentioned, it's always interesting to hear other singers' takes on the original recordings of another artist's music.
Highs: "Sanctified With Dynamite", "Nightside Of Siberia" and "Fist By Fist".
Lows: "Demons Are A Girl's Best Friend".
