As expected, Night Ranger come smacking you with a solid hard rock assault filled with catchiness right out of the gate on the opener "Somehow Someway", and that continues on tracks like "Running Out Of Time" and the title track. The riffs between Brad Gillis and new guitarist Keri Kelli never fail to delight and the same can be said about the vocals between Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy. The band even show their bluesy side on "(Won't Be Your) Fool Again", which is a nice surprise. Now we have arrived at the point where things go acoustic, which is "We Can Work It Out". Just so people know, this isn't a cover of the Beatles song, but it definitely has a Beatles flare to it, both musically and with the vocal harmonies. It may be the record's softest track, but there's no doubt that you will find yourself singing along to this one, it's insanely catchy. The song also gives off a slight country flavour.
With "Jamie", you might think that with a title like that, it would be a ballad, but it's actually a slamming rocker with that strong classic rock vibe, making it a really fun track. Closer "Nothing Left To Yesterday" is another area where the acoustic guitars come out. It starts out softly, but it turns loud and huge when the chorus comes in. That's not a complaint. Plus, the harmonized solo will give you chills. A great ending to a solid rock album. As I mentioned above, Night Ranger has been going for 35 years now and Don't Let Up is proof that there's still a lot of gas left in the tank and we'll definitely be getting more music from these great rock legends in the future.
Highs: "Running Out Of Time", "Don't Let Up" and "We Can Work It Out"
