22 years, 7 studio albums, one live album, one compilation album, and 2016 marks the year we've gotten the very first EP from Lamb Of God. It will still be at least a couple more years until we get a new full-length from the band, but the EP titled The Duke, featuring two brand new tracks and three live tracks will be a good hold-over until then. The two new tracks are the main focus of the EP, especially the title track. Written in tribute to the band's late friend Wayne "The Duke" Ford, who passed away from cancer, it once again sees Randy Blythe shining bright at his clean vocal performance, something that raised more than a few eyebrows on "Overlord" on VII: Sturm und Drang. Randy really excels at cleans and I think he should continue to include cleans on future Lamb Of God albums along with the awesome signature growl we've all come to love.
If you're still put off by Randy's cleans, then "Culling" redeems for what "The Duke" lacks for you. There's a pretty big old-school vibe making the track feel like it's something that could've been on As The Palaces Burn or Ashes Of The Wake and Chris Adler shines with a short but nice drum solo. As for the three live tracks, they are all taken from VII: Sturm und Drang and were recorded live from the tour cycle for the album. They're all nice additions to this great EP. Be sure to pick up a copy as it's for a good cause.
