The military drumming and sing-along guitar melody of "Apocalypticon" can be compared to a volcano that's building pressure to erupt, and "World War Now" serves as the eruption point with explosive riffs and the unmistakable Mille Petrozza snarl. The track however takes a melodic turn in the middle before exploding right back into uncontrollable chaos with rampaging solos. On this album, Kreator remain as brutal and as thrashy as ever, as proven by the violent thrashers and album favourites like "Totalitarian Terror", "Gods Of Violence", "Army Of Storms" and "Lion With Eagle Wings". These tracks contain choruses you just know will get crowds participating with fists in the air and loud boisterous voices, and spin them into a moshing frenzy at the same time.
In addition to the relentless aggression, there's an abundance of glorious melodies making their presence known. Case in point, "Hail To The Hordes", a heavy, yet majestic headbanger with melodies of biblical proportions, especially from the guitar harmonies, and the track even contains bagpipes, courtesy of Boris Pfeiffer of In Extremo. Other winning moments include "Satan Is Real" and the driving headbanger "Fallen Brother", providing hooks that are heavy and catchy at the same time. I really like how "Side By Side" serves as a two-sided song, and what I mean by that is that the first half is relentlessly brutal but turns melodic in the second half. "Death Becomes My Light" is hands down one of the best songs Kreator has ever written, combining melody, aggression and catchiness, resulting in a grandiose number to close out a perfect album.
I'm not a guitarist, but holy shit, some of these riffs Mille has cooked up have my wrists in pain just thinking about the dexterity needed to execute the riffs. These songs contain even more riffs than on the previous records. Ventor is just a machine on the drums and continues to deliver earth-shattering performances. I'm going to have a lot of fun playing these songs on drums. Of course, you can't leave out Sami Yli-Sirnio, who is a master of melody when it comes to solos. To sum it all up, Kreator have successfully surpassed Phantom Antichrist with an album jam-packed with mighty riffs, melodies of pure beauty, memorability and overall quality songwriting. What Phantom Antichrist and Gods Of Violence share is providing a complete sonic portrait of all the Kreator elements we've come to love. I know it's still way early to say, but as far as the best album of 2017 goes, we just might have a winner already with Gods Of Violence.
Highs: Violent riffs, glorious melodies, excellent songwriting. Kreator RULES!
