Since the last Hatebreed album The Concrete Confessional, he has released two new albums with his solo band Jasta, those being The Lost Chapters and The Lost Chapters Vol. 2. This review will focus on the second volume. For this second Lost Chapters album, he has assembled a pretty awesome line of special guests for each track. This album features guest appearances from Max Cavalera of Soulfly, Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage, Matt Heafy from Trivium, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher from Cannibal Corpse, Howard Jones of Light The Torch, Phil Rind of Sacred Reich and Tommy Victor of Prong just to name a few. Jasta is known for incorporating more melody into the music and the vocals on his solo stuff, something you don't really get with Hatebreed.
Many of the tracks go in a more straightforward metal direction, while still clinging on to the elements of hardcore. There's a decent flow to the tracks, from the heavy grooving opener "They Want Your Soul", with Corpsegrinder of Cannibal Corpse, to the thrashy rager "Silence The Enemy Mind" with BillyBio of Biohazard. The vocals are very much in the realm of what Jasta does in Hatebreed, but he also incorporates a lot more melody. For example, he does some pretty sweet harmonies with Matt Heafy of Trivium on "When The Contagion Is You" and with Zoli Teglas of Ignite on "Cleansed By The Waves". The album closes with a pretty damn good cover of Megadeth's "Holy Wars", which features Joey Concepcion of Sanctuary on guitar. Jasta did a great job of putting his own spin on the vocals, but it's a pretty true-to-form cover. It's also the only track that has guitar solos.
Fans of Hatebreed might not embrace the more melodic and straightforward metal approach on the Jasta records, but it's great for fans who enjoy that stuff a bit more, and also good for Jasta to get some of those elements out that don't necessarily fit Hatebreed's style. Now, The Lost Chapters Vol. 2 is far from being an incredible record, but it's an enjoyable one at best. Some of the riffs feel a little bland, and they don't have that element that entice the listener. I also feel that the tracks could've used some guitar solos. I just think solos help bring songs to another level. If Jasta would take adding solos into consideration for his next solo release, he could probably have an amazing record on his hands.
Highs: "They Want Your Soul", "Cleansed By The Waves" and "When The Contagion Is You"
Lows: Some bland riffs in a few songs and the lack of solos.
