I remember it like it was yesterday, the day that Children Of Bodom announced the surprising news that they were calling it quits. It was originally stated that the reasoning was for Henkka Seppala, Jaska Raatikainen and Janne Wirman wanting to focus more on family life, but the truth was later revealed that they couldn't handle Alexi Laiho's out-of-control substance abuse. There was also some business issues that also fueled some tension between the members, which also led to the band's demise. In late 2019, they closed out their final chapter with the Hexed album, and a tour around Finland, ultimately concluding with a big arena show at the Ice Hall in Helsinki. That final show also resulted in a live album titled A Chapter Called Children Of Bodom, with a setlist spanning their entire career and touching on every studio album.
At the start of 2021, shockwaves were sent across the world when it was announced that Alexi passed away at the age of only 41 just a few days prior at the tail end of 2020. Before that, Alexi continued making music his new band Bodom After Midnight, along with Daniel Freyberg, which only resulted in the Paint The Sky With Blood EP, which was posthumously released in 2021. These days, hearing any new release with Alexi's voice is going to ignite a whole lot of emotions. For any fan, it's always a bittersweet feeling when their favourite band releases something posthumously, because while it may be a new release, it's the feeling of knowing that this might be the last time that anything from their favourite band will get released, so savouring the moment is always important.
Going back to the album, the setlist featured at least one song from every COB studio album, which only seems fitting, considering it's the last-ever show. It features songs from their last decade like "Under Glass & Clover", "Shovel Knockout", "I Worship Chaos" and "Halo Of Blood", but then there's also the standard fan favourites from late 90s and 2000s like "Blooddrunk", "Hate Crew Deathroll", "In Your Face", "Angels Don't Kill", "Follow The Reaper", "Deadnight Warrior", "Needled 24/7" and the classic show closer "Downfall". You can pretty much say that this is the definitive COB setlist for any fan. To this day, while Alexi may no longer be with us and it doesn't look like there are anymore recordings in the archives, we're very fortunate to have the wealth of material he and Children Of Bodom blessed the world with since 1997.
