Chaos Over Cosmos is a rather interesting metal outfit. It can't really be called a band, due to the fact that it's a duo, but most importantly, the two musicians never even met in person. As a result, this is an online musical project. When I first read that, I thought it was a little bizarre, but was intrigued to find out more. Now, I'm a guy that prefers bands making music together in the same room, while still using online platforms to exchange ideas as well. The band consists of Rafal Bowman from Poland, who handles guitars, synths and programming (I'm not a fan of the programming aspect, as I would rather have all the instruments be live) and Joshua Ratcliff from Australia, who handles the vocals and writes the lyrics. The debut album The Unknown Voyage was released in September 2018, and the guys have now released a brand new self-titled EP that came out back in July.
There are only three tracks. The first two tracks: "Cascading Darkness" and "Consumed" are 7 and 8 minutes long, with frenetic guitar work from Bowman, and a good mix of aggressive and clean vocals from Ratcliff. The second track is where you can really hear tempo shifts, and different time signatures (if you're one of those people that like to count along with music). There were some moments where Ratcliff went to hit some high notes in "Consumed", and they didn't really work. His tone seemed a bit off. The third track is an instrumental, and it's only 3.5 minutes, with some soothing piano parts, combined with heavy riffing and some really nice melodic leads. You probably will never have the opportunity to see Chaos Over Cosmos on a live stage, but I would definitely recommend you check out the new EP, plus the debut album, and at least see what they're all about.
