When it comes to EPs, I usually don't like it when it's a majority of live tracks, and one studio track. I'd much rather prefer 2-3 studio tracks and maybe 2-3 live tracks. The studio tracks would be leftover tracks from the sessions of the latest studio album, and the live tracks would be live versions of songs from the official album. That being said, Alter Bridge released their latest album Walk The Sky a year ago, and managed to do a couple of tours in support of the album before the pandemic hit. Instead of doing nothing, the band decided to put out an EP, which contains one brand new studio track, and six live versions of tracks from Walk The Sky. The EP is aptly titled Walk The Sky 2.0.
The brand new track, which opens the EP, titled "Last Rites" is a heavy tune. In my honest opinion, I found the main riff, verses and pre-choruses very strong, but the chorus was rather weak. What it lacked was that captivating hook that you would expect a chorus to have. The track was written and recorded during the lockdown after the band's tour plans for the year were cancelled. The live versions of "Wouldn't You Rather", "Pay No Mind", "Native Son", "Godspeed", "In The Deep" and "Dying Light" were recorded during the band's two U.S headline legs in support of the album. The production of the live tracks is really well done, and I love how Myles Kennedy sounds vocally on these versions, especially "Pay No Mind".
Ever since they started back in 2004, Alter Bridge have put out a new album every three years. Given that it will be a bit before any band goes back out on tour, is there a chance we might get some new music from Alter Bridge sooner? I'm not so sure, because Mark Tremonti is starting work on what will be the fifth Tremonti album, and Myles is probably going to do another solo album, so Alter Bridge might just continue with the consistent three-year pattern of releasing albums. In the meantime, Walk The Sky is still fresh, and if you loved that album, you'll love the live versions of the songs on Walk The Sky 2.0.
