Local death/thrash masters Detherous launched the opening salvo with a merciless sensory assault that brought to mind Slayer and Sepultura in their early years. Next, Beneath the Wicked took to the stage with their very own catchy and hook-laden classic metal brew. |
Nuclear Oath made the three hour journey from Medicine Hat to dish out their intense brand of nu-metal meets hardcore, thrash, and melo-death, as cooked up on their recently released debut album, Toxic Playground.
Subsume steered things into more melodic, post-metal prog territory with a fragile and ambitious set at times reminiscent of Tool and Opeth (when lost in their tranquil meditations). Gales of Avalon closed the night with hard-hitting numbers from their 2017 concept album, Hope, while also incorporating digital imagery into their performance. here to edit. Given the talent and diversity heard throughout the night, the judges had their work cut out for them... but in the end, Subsume and Gales of Avalon emerged as winners of the round. They will now face off against round 1 champs Dethgod and Hammerdrone, and two other challengers, at the Calgary final on February 23, 2018. Who else will stand against them for the Wacken Metal Battle Calgary crown? Find out at Distortion - Live Music Venue, on Saturday, February 10.
