The perilous trials of Wacken Metal Battle Canada are now under way; with four of sixteen west coast based independent metal bands kicking things off tonight in round one for Vancouver’s top entry. The first entries in the competition are as follows.

Crucifliction are entering battle fresh off their December 2013 release of “Heresy Is Met with Fire” and are looking to put away this year’s stiff competition with their instant-classic thrash metal melodies. The role of vocals split between Calvin Ma and Chris Robertson bring to life the gnarly terror’s that the legend Dave Mustaine made so famous with his wicked yelling style of singing. With Alex Nacci on drums, Chris Sheehan on lead guitar and the aforementioned also ruling the bass and rhythm guitar respectively, the bands musical direction is that ultimate late 80’s thrash sound that everyone knows and loves.

Death thrash monsters Dead Asylum are stepping onto the battlegrounds with a threatening and otherworldly brutal sound. Mike Lister and Tyler Forde trade off vicious guttural growls while decimating ear drums with ferocious guitar work at the same time. Backed up by Samantha Landa on drums and Tyler Meierhofer on bass, the bands conjuration of destructive force is going to turn the pit into a head banging bloodbath.

Fighting with a different approach is Omnisight, a progressive metal band with a much lighter sound. Not to be taken lightly, their highly appealing sound is loaded with intricate melodies and patterns. Raj Krishna’s chilling vocals suit the dreamy guitar play that he and fellow shredder Blake Rurik blend together perfectly. Powerhouse drummer Chris Warunki carries everything along beautifully with triple threat bassist/producer/backup vocalist Dave Shannon.

Without Mercy is serving up a plate of deadly groove metal for the shows final course. The band will be riding momentum into the fray from their January 2014 EP release titled “Reborn”. Alex Friis’ mind crushing vocals are in perfect sync with DJ Temple on guitar, Tristan Martin on bass and Matt Helie on drums. The chaotic swaying death melodies are going to blow the roof of off the poor ol’ Red Room.
The winner tonight will face off with three other west coast bands in the semi-finals on May 3rd at the legendary thrash house that is the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, BC. The victor then moves onto the finals taking place at the Opera House in Toronto, Ontario, competing for the sacred prize of playing onstage at prestigious Wacken 2014 in Germany! Best of luck to all the contestants!
