The Hell Pop Tour - Ft. Lauderdale, Florida is where I had my first experience with In This Moment. Going to the show I didn’t know what to expect. I have seen the Butcher Babies before, so I was expecting something like that; hard, loud, and crazy. That was an understatement.
The first two bands, All Hail the Yeti and Devour the Day, I hate to say this but I haven’t heard of them before this show. Both bands were loud and just put on one hell of a performance. Also, these two bands made it to my play list. The Butcher Babies came out crazy and loud and just epitomized “Heavy Fucking Metal”. They were all over the stage, in the crowd, jumping, screaming, singing; it’s amazing to watch them do their thing. Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey bring a creepy-yet-sexy vibe to the band, and these ladies never fail with their killer vocals, guttural screaming accompanied by the heavy-riffed support from the band. In between the bands I was able to talk to people in the crowd and they kept telling me how amazing In this Moment is. One couple drove 2 hours to see them. As the lights dimmed they started off with “Rise with Me”. I was blown away. The singer, Maria Brink, has such an amazing voice. The stage set up looked like the entrance to a rundown demented . |
freak show. The backup dancers (who would ever think of back-up dancers at a Metal show, but they worked) wore coordinating costumes with the singer (who also had a few costume changes). The dancers also wore creepy white masks, which apparently is their thing. The songs were heavy and melodic with Maria singing and or screaming to them. In the middle of the set she slowed things down with a crazy emotional performance of “Into the Light”, again something you don’t expect from a metal show, but it was amazing. Another costume change and she kept on going. She sang a bunch of songs and also did a cover of “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails. The drummer put on a LONG ass drum solo but it was great, the crowd went wild. She also played the song “Whore” where she came out like a bad ass version of a school girl with a dunce cap with the words “WHORE” in red down the front. Then they played their hit tune, “Blood”, towards the end of the show. I have to say, this was one of those shows where I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was BLOWN away! I suggest that download their entire library as I did. |
