SYMMETRY IN WINTER
|
The stage is set for a North meets South showdown. Massachusetts' own Unearth and Louisiana natives Crowbar descend to the Revolution Live in Ft. Lauderdale to throw down in classic Metal fashion.
Clearly, these two high-powered outfits have earned their rights in the pages of Metal's elite bands. Having influenced many that came after them, now I had the unique pleasure of seeing these two greats showcase their talents on stage. Only having two bands on the lineup this evening, Unearth is set to go on first. As they take the stage, the excitement builds as this is the first time I have seen this band in over 10 years. Clearly from the start, they do not disappoint. High-octane guitar riffs, fueled by blistering drums, they are clearly what I remember them to be. Trevor Phipps' vocals were on point, but Nick Pierce's drums were what impressed me the most out of anything; incredibly technical and on point, laying down a solid foundation. Song selection varied, having quite a repertoire to pick from, their 8-song set contained a little bit of old/little bit of new and everything in between. Very impressed by the way the set went and how Unearth captured the crowd’s attention. |
The mighty Crowbar was next and this was who I came to see. Never having seen them before, I couldn't wait to catch Kirk Windstein in action. Now I have seen many other projects that have spawned from Crowbar, but never quite the original thing. Now many of us may know Kirk from projects such as Down and Kingdom of Sorrow, but do not be fooled, all this came from Crowbar. The lights go down, the music begins and you could hear that low guttural Southern metal guitar rip through the air. Low-toned, grooving riffs with raspy vocals laid on top, with some upbeat double bass tempo songs in between, it was clear to see that this was the band that had influenced so many. This was not your ear-blasting superfast metal/rock group. Slow Southern groove is the name of this game! I loved the sets. Both groups did a phenomenal job! It's amazing to see how far music has come, and to see that these musicians are still doing it after all these years. I am proud to say that these are my roots, this is where I came from, and metal is in my blood till the day I die! |
