Age of Menace was made up of some members of Sydney band “Heifer”. I used to go and watch Heifer play live at all ages gigs before I was legal (over 18).I was in another band rehearsing at the same rehearsal studio as age of menace late 2010. They were looking for a guitarist and I tried out for the job , 6 years later and we are still making music together. Everyone in the band is into broad styles of music - Myself : I love rap and I love heavy metal. Cypress Hill, Dr.Dre, Die Antwoord, Dimmu Borgir, Deep Purple, Pantera are probably my favorites acts.
Our bass player Adam Barns records and produces our music. Everyone contributes to the writing process. The setup always changes though for the last recording we recorded drums in a studio in Sydney then we recorded guitar and bass at Adams house and we send the files to Rob who is now based in LA. I also recorded some guitars with Mike Sprietzer (Devildriver) at his studio in LA which was an awesome experience!!
It became clear to us that with our current writing and recording process in our home studios and Barnsey's pro setup where it would all get mixed, that we were producing high quality stuff that we would not have to "re-record" in a big studio. So we have a truly self-contained cottage industry of self-production of our music, and with the release of Venom we will now be able to get more material written and released to our listeners much faster.
Is the band releasing, or recently released a new album? We have been rehearsing leading up to this EP “Venom” which is being released May 2016. We also have a video clip coming for the title track “Venom” which was made independent. Barnsey got all of the 4k footage from a local green screen studio session and cut it at home. Are any band members receiving equipment endorsements?

Unfortunately not. My guitar rig consists of a custom made speaker cabinet and a Rocktron power amp being run from my laptop…. So I’m very open for any endorsements that may come my way. Maybe “Positive Grid” can give me free tasty plugins??
Any tour announcements to share with the fans? We are doing a show for our EP “Venom” on the 10th of June at the Bald Faced stag in Leichardt Sydney. This is a one time show and is expected to be our only show for the next 12 months in Australia Does your band have a pre show ritual? I think everyone just has a beer or two (or four or five in Rob’s case) and relaxes. I wish I had a tale of a drug fueled diva scenario though it’s all pretty standard. |
The show I enjoyed playing the most was at “The Square” in Sydney to launch our last EP “All Seeing Lie”. We sold out the venue and it was just a really good vibe in the room. During one of the songs I got up on the front of house speaker stand and did a solo and I fell forward and my foot was caught by Matt Bourke from “Mortal Enemy” - He held me in position so I could finish. Great guy! He’s coming to our next show in June
An Aussie band called “Red Bee” always wow’s us when we see them. Local guys from the Blue Mountains of NSW really rock out hard! A great gig that was only attended to by our drummer Adam Breakspear and myself was Cypress Hill for the Rise Up tour in 2011.
Any last words to share with the fans? We hope you enjoy these latest songs! If you do enjoy them please reach out to us online - it makes the process much more rewarding for us when we know you like the tracks. Traffic lights, windows down, annoying the fuck out of everyone is a good place for us to be. Thanks for answering our questions. We wish the band much success in the future. | |
