Will of the Ancients Cromlech The Comfort Zone Toronto, ON, Canada Saturday August 16, 2014 Not many shows have hit Toronto during the summer season, but Winnipeg doom metallers Psychotic Gardening hit Toronto on their national tour and played the Comfort Zone on a warm Saturday night. This night was fun for me because we have welcomed my very good friend and musical blood brother Aaron Chatterpaul into the MMK fold, and he got to conduct his first interview with Psychotic Gardening. It was an amazing experience for me to watch Aaron interview the band.
First band on was Cromlech. While they are very good musicians, they did struggle to hold my interest for most of the second half of their set. All their songs were over 10 minutes long, but most of their harmonies and guitar licks were ear-perking. While Kevin Loughnane is a great vocalist, I found that his vocals were too distorted through the P.A, especially his falsetto. I think that's one little issue that could have been improved. If I was to describe Cromlech's style, it would be Iron Maiden meets black metal and doom metal with clean vocals. |
Second band was Will Of The Ancients. This is the first time I've seen a full set by them, whereas the last time I saw them at the Hard Luck, I was only able to stay for one song due to having to catch a train. Frontman Tristan Biggar was also the promoter of the show. Even though their songs were shorter than Cromlech's, their sound was still pretty distorted. The guitars were turned up too much, they drowned out everything else, so all that was heard was a loud buzzing noise.
Then came Psychotic Gardening to close the night off. What was weird was that since Cromlech, the crowd got smaller and smaller. Cromlech was the only band that had a decent turnout, but once Psychotic Gardening came on, there were probably 8 or 10 people in the crowd, and later grew back up to about 16 people the most. However, the band had no problem with it and that's the way it should be, so kudos to them. Psychotic Gardening had the cleanest sound of all the bands. Everything was distinguishable and the riffs were chunky, crunchy, groovy and aggressive, just what metal fans love.
