Venue: The Observatory, Santa Ana, CA, USA
Date: October 26, 2013
It is Saturday afternoon, and The Observatory was greeted with a huge crowd of people for a Dead Letter Circus concert that was sponsored by Affliction Clothing Store and hosted by José Mangin of Liquid Metal (Sirius XM), a channel most satellite radio subscribers are very familiar with.
It has been a while since the band from Down Under, Dead Letter Circus, toured North America; with the release of their sophomore studio album The Catalyst Fire in the US on October 29, 2013, it was a great time for them to do so. After guitarist and founding band member Rob Maric parted ways with the band, the album was released in Australia on August 13, 2013. This is the first time to feature the new band members; Tom Skerlj and Clint Vincent. Skerlj was added to the band as a second guitarist and keyboardist in 2011.
The band’s set included an awesome mix of both new and old songs playing tracks such as “The Mile” and “The Space on the Wall.” It wasn’t until they played songs “Lodestar” and “The Veil” when the crowd went nuts. Even though the band had a short 6 song set, vocalist Kim Benzie hit those notes to perfection and sounded very clean pitched. Bassist Stewart Hill gave off an extreme amount of energy while playing his amazing bass riffs and jumping around on stage. Luke Williams blasted away on the drums at one point playing them while standing up. Both of the new guitarists Clint and Tom played so well and shredded the solos to pure perfection that if you were a first timer to Dead Letter Circus, you would have thought they have been together for years. The audience and I definitely enjoyed watching this band play and can’t wait to see them back in the States for another tour. Make sure you catch Dead Letter Circus when they come to a city near you!
