This was an epic show from so many different angles. From the first band to the last, we were given dramatic performances with slightly different genres but every performance was heavy and melodic. The first band up was Black Crown Initiate with their bearded goodness and great rhythm section. I couldn’t help but thinking that vocalist James Dorton resembled Dark Tranquillity’s Michael Stanne with his voluptuous red hair and beard. Guitarist/Vocalist Andy Thomas’s hair and beard were far mightier, but facial hair aside, Thomas’s clean vocals complemented Dorton’s growls. When guitarist Rik Stelzpflug joined in with his deeper growls and the three combined their voices, I was completely won over. A solo section for the guitars and bass only emphasized their talent and prepared the crowd for a mind blowing night.
Necronomicon is everything you want from a black metal band. From their corpse paint image to their wrist-breaking fast riffs, Necronomicon was a windmilling fury of black metal. There seemed to be a few technical issues with Rob “The Witch”, which were dealt with quickly and professionally, but at the Opera House, we have come to expect technical and sound issues. Fleshgod Apocalypse was everything a fan could dream of and then some! Opening up with “Temptation” and then moving on into fan favourites such as “The Hypocrisy” and “Minotaur,” the crowd was reeling in excitement and headbanging along to every beat. The band stayed in character throughout the entire set with their ripped up tuxedos and grim makeup. Tommaso Riccardi led fans into fist pumping fits as many just stared in awe at pianist Francesco Ferrini energetic performance. |
Tommaso combines his deep growls with bassist Paolo Rossi’s powerful clean vocals, creating the unique sound that fans love from Fleshgod Apocalypse. Though there was a technical issue (ugh, cmon Opera House!) and the band had to stop mid song and start over, something I have never actually seen in a live professional performance, Fleshgod Apocalypse did it with such grace that fans simply loved the humanity of the situation. They finished off their set with “The Violation” and “The Forsaking,” leaving fans smiling from ear to ear. Septicflesh came back with a vengeance. From playing their last show in the Annex Wreckroom, they have since revamped their image, released a new album and headlined the Opera House. With an intense new image that consists of fleshlike leather armour and an insane stage setup, their stage performance alone is worth watching. Septicflesh treated us to new tracks like “Order of Dracul,” “Prototype” and “Burn” from their new album Titan (2014). This Greek band takes their dramatic performance to a new level with vocalist/bassist Seth Sero Anton completely in character throughout the set. Their heavy melodic tunes took a step down from the fast paced Fleshgod Apocalypse tracks, but fans didn’t seem to notice as the pit was still alive and a noteworthy gathering of headbangers stayed diligently throughout their set. |
