BattleCross Show Review
July 31st 2013 The day is July 31st , the location is Tampa, Florida on what I can estimate to be the hottest day of the year. The temperature is in the low 90’s but it feels like 150. There’s only one reason I would ever be here. That’s right: it’s Mayhem Festival and the greatest culmination of Heavy Metal bands since Ozzfest are here to melt our Metal Loving Faces OFF! There is one band in particular that I am very excited to hear, considering I’ve heard so much about them and how they are on fire! The band I’m speaking of is Michigan’s own Battlecross, and they have been tearing it up in that area for years. But as of late they have been touring extensively with some HUGE names! Sharing the stage with the likes of GWAR, In Flames and Hatebreed to name a few, and on the heels of their most recent release “War of Will” on Metal Blade Records, this was not a band I wanted to miss. Now the moment of truth had arrived. ATTIKA 7 was wrapping up their set and Battlecross took the stage. Crowds not only rush the stage, they are ravenous to say the least. As the band takes their positions in mid-riff, vocalist Kyle Gunther takes center and bellows out the most guttural of screams. The drums are blaring in my ears and here come the saw cutting guitars piercing into my ears. Over the next 30 minutes the band trades songs from their earlier album “Pursuit of Honor” and newest release “War of Will” and, to tell truth, I could have listened to them for the next 4 hours. The music was intense, incredible guitar work and just all out energy. As the show progressed the excitement and intensity built to insanity. At one point Kyle sent a call to the audience, and I quote “Put security to work!” by having the crowd surf over the railings. Almost immediately you could see dozens of people acknowledge the call, and most certainly security had their hands full. Battlecross live brought me back to the days of thrash metal at its roots: heavy, fast, aggressive, intense music. The evolution of metal has come full circle, and thrash metal is making an amazing comeback. I for one was very impressed by Battlecross overall, their music, professionalism and of course their live show. It is one that you do not want to miss! |
