This night was one that will live in infamy! Four rowdy bands that sing about drinking and good times broke down the gates and stormed the stage at the Mod Club on November 28, 2013. For a concert that resembled more of an out of control house party, I was not surprised to find lovely puddles of vomit early on in the evening.
Crimson Shadows had the task of getting us all pumped up for the bands to come and they excelled at it. With vocalist Jimi Maltais’ trademark energy, Crimson Shadows got fans headbanging and showing the band their muscles. Though they didn’t play my favourite track, “Kingdom of Ale,” they did show us some new material which was well received. Gypsyhawk switched up the ambiance a bit, taking us back with some old school metal. Groovy notes and catchy melodies are a big part of their tracks but they keep it heavy and in tune with the theme of the night. Though Gypsyhawk was the odd one out on tonight’s roster, they completely won me over with their Game Of Thrones-inspired song. The Norwegian party monsters Trollfest took the stage next. Having just had a chance to talk with them over some beers, I was pretty excited to see their set. Trollfest did not disappoint. With vocalist Jostvein “Trollmannen” Austvik’s grody looking bumble bee costume (which I’m pretty sure hasn’t been washed since… ever) and the greasy looking black paint all over the band’s bodies (and the very artistic penis on guitarist John Sagstad’s neck), you know you’ll be in for some laughs. Though I was sad to see that Trollfest’s saxophonist had to miss out on tonight’s show (something about a broken leg?), we got some groovy beats and Øyvind Manskow’s accordion to give us that special Trollfest sound. There was dancing, moshing and a lot of laughing throughout their set, especially when metalheads betrayed themselves by singing along to Trollfest’s cover of “Toxic” by Britany Spears. Trollfest amped up the party mode with their track “Der Jagermeister” and “Brumblebassen” with the easy to sing along to chorus of, you guessed it, “Brumblebassen!... Brumblebassen!” |
Alestorm was received with drunken roars and piratey arr’s as they opened up with “The Quest.” The pit opened up and the headbanging started hard as fans went into full Alestorm mode (a lot of drinking, singing and fucking shit up.) After a few Alestorm anthems they hit “Wenches And Mead” and the party mode reached the apex. How can it not when you’re chanting along to a chorus of “Hey, hey! I want more Wenches! Hey, hey! More Wenches and Mead!” with some fast drums and accordion melodies? One fanette got pulled up on stage for a dedication of “Midget Saw” after a general consensus of her being the shortest person in the crowd. You can just imagine how that went down.
The laughs didn’t stop there. At some point Alestorm did a cover of “In the Navy” from the Village People which had fans roaring with laughter and saluting, and the Crimson Shadows boys were on the sidelines, feeding guitarist Dani Evans beer, egging on the crowd or jumping off the stage. Fans were wild but calmed down a bit for the Pirate Ballad “Nancy The Tavern Wench.” Bowes started mimicking the classic boat rowing move for that song but not many fans got the hint. After that short breather Alestorm went into their faster songs “Keelehauled” and “Back Through Time,” stirring fans up to a boil. Alestorm came back with a vengeance for their encore with “Set Sail And Conquer” and “Captain Morgan’s Revenge” bringing a rain of crowdsurfers who, due to a lack of barrier, ended up jumping off the stage. They topped the night of with the must have song “Rum” and a few lucky fans, myself included, got pulled onstage to sing with the band and instigate some rowdiness. We all concluded the night with a stage dive and a “Man! That was an amazing show!!” |
