ACCEPT w/ Raven
Belly Up Tavern Solana Beach, CA, U.S.A. September 11, 2014
On a hot Thursday night a crowd gathered in downtown Solana Beach to see the legendary metal rocker’s Accept perform a limited city tour. The tour lineup included Raven and Metal Church. Due to a last minute medical issue, Metal Church had to drop off the tour. This gave room for Raven to perform an even longer set.
Raven hails from England and they are currently celebrating their 40th anniversary. With such a long range of experienced musicianship, these metalers know how to entertain their crowd. Playing a 45-minute set, brothers John and Mark Gallagher dueled away on their bass and guitars using them as a sword and shield crossing them in the air for all to see and drummer Joe Hasselvander also got up a few times from his drummer seat to interact with the crowd. You know a band is definitely putting energy in their performance when they bleed doing what they love and Mark sure did as blood trickled down his hand from his on stage battle wound. Great set from Raven to open up the show. The band is set to go on a larger North America tour in October with Night Demon.
After a brief intermission it was finally time for the legends themselves, Accept. The heavy metal veterans have been promoting their recent album Blind Rage with the current mini U.S. tour promising their fans to come back for a full North American tour in the near future. Most of their set consisted of songs mainly from the new record and post 2010 work, but they didn’t forget about their fans from the beginning of their success and included songs from pre Mark Tornillo era. The energy Accept gave out on stage was truly rubbing off on the crowd as they chanted along their favorite songs such as “Balls to the Wall”. Wolf Hoffmann on guitar and Peter Baltes on bass truly shined as they interacted with the restless crowd. It was one of the best performances I have witnessed in a long time and I was amazed to see such a turn out from the audience who were young and old. With such stage presence and charisma, it is no wonder why bands like Accept have been successful in bringing heavy metal to everyone’s ears for over 3 decades.
