To this day, I still don't think they've been able to top Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, and I don't ever expect them to at this point. It served as the perfect middle ground of their heavier metal tinged rockabilly roots on the first four records, and the more accessible sound and eclectic styles they would start including on the albums that would follow. Not even letting their sense of humour take a break, Michael Poulsen formed the band's longest song title, and probably one of the longest song titles in music history: "In The Barn Of The Goat Giving Birth To Satan's Spawn In A Dying World Of Doom." Even I'm not done reading that yet. Musically, the track shines the light on the band's rockabilly roots.
While much of the album leans heavy, there are some lighter moments as expected. "Lonely Fields" touches on the loss of Poulsen's father, making it the second song in the band's catalog after "Fallen" to be in tribute to his father. "Time Will Heal" is another straightforward, feel-good tune with simple hooks designed to brighten anyone's day at least a little bit. For those looking for the more heavier and driving Volbeat numbers, there's "Devils Are Awake", "By A Monster's Hand", "Demonic Depression", "Better Be Fueled Than Tamed" and "At The End Of The Sirens". There really is no reinventing of the wheel here, but it's very much another by-the-numbers Volbeat album, and that can be a good or not so good, depending on how you look at it. For me however, there's nothing on here that blew me away, but there are songs on here that are fun to listen to when I'm in the mood for it.
