At this point, any new music from any of the surviving members of Rush is something to be cherished and truly savoured. Although I will fully admit that I wasn't all that into Alex Lifeson's current project Envy Of None, I still cheer him on to do what he loves, and while I truly appreciate the music he put out so far with that band, it wasn't something that hit me in the sweet spot. Geddy Lee on the other hand has been busy with promoting books, namely the Big Beautiful Book Of Bass, and just recently, his first ever memoir: My Effin Life. People are constantly asking both Geddy and Alex whether they will do something musically again at some point. While both express hope, they also tend to cast doubt. I mean, the guys are in their 70s now, and would much rather do things at their pace now. Geddy has mentioned about the possibility of doing another solo album, which would be his first one since My Favourite Headache in 2000. Speaking of which, he recently dug into the archives, and he came across two songs from the sessions for that album that just needed some touching up. The result is a two-song EP, aptly titled The Lost Demos.
These two songs, titled "Gone" and "I Am...You Are" are guaranteed to conjure up a lot of emotions, particularly "Gone", because of its poignancy now, given that Neil Peart's no longer with us, and is still sorely missed by us all, although the song was written over 20 years ago. Oddly enough, it was written in tribute to Neil's daughter Selena, who sadly died in the car accident, so there's like an eerie connection there. "I Am... You Are" is a much more uplifting song with a nice drive and a super catchy vocal pattern. It honestly sounds like a lost Rush outtake from the 90s that could easily be at home on like Presto, Roll The Bones or Test For Echo. Given how much Rush mean to me, I'd be lying if I said that hearing these demos didn't turn on the water works in my eyes, even if just slightly. It's not a Rush release, but you got the voice of Rush, making it feel like that. Like many, I surely hope this isn't the last time that we hear Geddy's unmistakable voice on a studio recording.
