​Thrash metal never dies! Like some mutated metal monster, a Thrashzilla if you will, it sees off all trends; and comes back stronger than ever fueled by love from fans and musicians alike. One such band are Ottawa’s ’80s legends INFRARED. A band who made a big impact with Canadian fans in the ’80s and in recent years returned to cement and carry on their own legacy.

Originally, Infrared was a high school band formed in the ’80s by friends who wanted to revel in the classic thrash sound that was quickly gaining traction. Collaborating on their sound since 1985 they have produced an EP (1988’s R.I.P.) and after rising from a 27-year hiatus, 2 albums “No Peace” in 2016 and “Saviours” in 2018.

Moving forward to make up for lost time, they bring a familiar aggressive and melodic classic thrash sound that is full of nostalgia, but also music that is still relevant and valid today. They explore topics that are basic human truths that don’t change over time and they consider themselves reporters through sound. Solidly rooted in classic thrash, Infrared pays homage to the Big Four and is dropping their new EP “Back To The Warehouse” in 2019 on June 14th to finally release the last of their classic material before the newest full-length studio album.

​Ottawa’s INFRARED is debuting 'Meet My Standards' off their forthcoming EP “Back To The Warehouse”, which is being premiered exclusively on Bravewords.

The EP is a collection of some of the older material that INFRARED deems worthy to unleash unto the public ahead of their next full studio album anticipated for 2020 release.

“They are the last of the old songs that we felt should see the light of day. Our upcoming EP is 5 songs. 4 originals and one cover of an Iron Maiden song. We hope that fans will appreciate the old school thrash metal feel of the release. We feel they are strong songs with interesting twists.”

'Meet My Standards' follows the formula that was set by the Big Four that INFRARED has been meticulously channeling since 1985. Tight riffs and modern writing sensibilities, this EP is a trip back in time to 80’s thrash metal. It is aggressive and melodic with lots of guitars and vocal hooks. 

The band explains the meaning behind the single:

“'Meet My Standards' is a middle finger to societies' desire to conform everyone to their standards. This song calls for the acceptance of independence and uniqueness.”

​Haven Dream is a cinematic symphonic metal project founded in 2017 by Nathan Gross (Age of Athena, Blood of Indigo).  Their upcoming album will feature Alina Gavrilenko on lead vocals (Snowmaiden, DiAmorte), and guest performances by guitarist Lucas McArthur (Solarus, Snowmaiden) and harsh vocalist Sam Astaroth (Astaroth Incarnate, Iomair).

They are currently working on their full-length debut album Internal.  The record will focus on promoting the awareness of mental illness, the exploration of dark thought processes, and personal struggle.

“Mental illness is something that affects us all, no matter how big or small.  Being a very close topic to me and having been through some very dark emotions in my life, I felt I needed to channel my experiences through music, and write about some of the many mental illness’ that affect millions of lives today.” - Nathan Gross

The album is a constant reminder about the devastating effects of mental illness, and a reminder to everyone that you are not alone, and there is always someone to talk to.

“With big arrangements, dark timbres and textures, I describe it as a combination of cinematic metal, traditional symphonic metal, and other influences.  Every song has its own unique character to express the mental illness/emotion that one is feeling within the present moment.  I’ve been very excited seeing the music come to life. Alina, Lucas, and Sam have all made stellar performances and I’m so grateful and privileged to have them a part of this experience, they are all such amazing people.  We are currently in the final stages of finishing this record, and are aiming to have it released by the fall. They have premiered two singles so far:

“The Weight of My Sea” describes the darker side of empathy, and how we can be overwhelmed by feeling other people’s emotional pain, feelings, and choices.  Those are psychological aspects that can weight us down like a ‘sea’. ‘My Sea’ is a metaphor for one’s own mind or brain.

“My Schizophrenia” is ultimately about the struggles of schizophrenia and the voices feeding on the mind and sanity.  Dealing with it every day is a constant struggle, and the song is a plea for inner peace.

It is because of Canadian local bands like Haven Dream, featuring talent by Nathan Gross, Alina Gavrilenko, Lucas McArthur, and Sam Astaroth, that I have been drawn to the sub genre mymphonic/cinematic metal.  This review covers the single “The Weight Of My Sea”, released via YouTube video in September 2018.

True to form, this song begins with atmospheric keyboards and choir-like voice accompaniments, which then brings in heavy drum blasts (albeit a drum machine) in double time.  Within a minute of listening to this song, the listener is brought to the true tempo of the song that mixes in a background voice whispering to our ears, and Alina Gavrilenko's voice carries along like that of a siren singing from a far off distance that cannot be truly traced to any particular place; it is as if her voice is floating through the fog and haze of the sea.I am truly captivated and intrigued to continue listening to her hauntingly seductive intonations. Then we hear her voice much more clearly, as if she stepped out of the sea vapour to stand right next to me. I am captivated by her alluring stirrings of sordid tales.

We all bear the burden of our own story, our own emotional selves, and this song represents that burden.  It can feel as heavy as trying to trudge through water, which we all know is not an easy task; it weighs us down and creates resistance.  There are many of us who know the feeling of being weighed down by the burden of carrying emotions and life challenges.  This song shares how one does experience the overbearing burden of carrying ourselves and carrying the burden of others on our shoulders.  It is with great strength and fortitude that we are able to achieve victory and peace to survive the daily life challenges and setbacks.

Finally, I am impressed with the overall production and mixing qualities of this single.  I cannot find any holes in this recording and I truly enjoyed “The Weight Of My Sea” from the beginning to the final keyboard ending.  Clean, clear, invoking, heartfelt.  Thanks to Haven Dream for your musicianship and devotion to this genre. ​
"My ​Schizophrenia" song review written by Alex Stojanovic
London, Ontario outfit Haven Dream is a new project that formed in 2017.  The project was founded by Nathan Gross (Age Of Athena, Blood Of Indigo), and it also features the talents of Alina Gavrilenko (Snowmaiden, DiAmorte), guest guitars by Lucas McArthur (Solarus, Snowmaiden) and guest harsh vocals by our good friend Sam Astaroth (Astaroth Incarnate).  The project is categorized as cinematic symphonic metal.  They are currently in the final stages of recording their debut album Internal, but to give fans a taste of what we can expect, they have premiered two singles so far, and they have asked us to review the songs, and of course, we said we would.  Two of us on the team reviewed the two individual songs.  Our very own Ingrid Newton reviewed the track "The Weight Of My Sea", and I took on the duty of reviewing the second single "My Schizophrenia".

Now, before we get into the song, let's just get a quick criticism out of the way.  My criticism about the track is the fact that the drums were programmed.  I know that they're programmed because there isn't a name for a drummer in the band's bio.  As I've said many times, I prefer all recordings to be kept as real as possible.  Which means no auto-tune, no pitch correction, no programmed instruments, none of that.  Whenever I find out that something is programmed on a recording, I don't get a comfortable feeling. Yes, I know that programming is a skill in itself, but my point is that when an instrument has been programmed, or a vocal has been put through auto-tone or pitch correction, then the authenticity is out the window, and I never like it when there isn't any authenticity on a recording.  I guess that's mainly the musician in me talking, but even if I wasn't a musician, I would still be saying that.  By the way, I'm in no way trying to sound like a snob when I say that.  I'm just being honest and saying what I really think and how I really feel in the nicest possible way.  Simply put, when it comes to performance, I just want recordings to be kept pure.  Same thing applies for live performance.  I could go into a whole rant about my dislike for programmed instruments, auto-tuned vocals, trickery and what not, but let's not make this about that.  However, this criticism about the track needed to be addressed.

​Now, just because I don't like that the drums are programmed, doesn't mean the song itself isn't good.  Right off the bat, as the song starts, we are greeted by both soaring vocals and soaring keyboards, before exploding into a fast-paced, uplifting keyboard melody with double-kick underneath.  Now, in comes Alina Gavrilenko with some astonishing vocals, where she hits some incredible high notes that mesmerized me.  The orchestral elements give the track that cinematic feel, and would fit as a soundtrack to an epic battle scene.  Later on, Sam comes in with some beastly vocals, giving this section of the song a bit of a black metal feel.  According to the band, the lyrics tackle the "struggles of schizophrenia and constantly hearing voices, being stuck inside your own mind, and detached from reality because of it."  A very powerful subject.  The band said that the goal with Internal is to promote the "awareness of mental illness and the exploration of dark thought processes and personal struggle."  That's amazing because those are very important topics that constantly need addressing.  We thank Haven Dream for reaching out to us to give reviews of their two singles, and we look forward to hearing what else the band have to offer on Internal when released.

N´Tribe (yes, short for the Nordic Tribe) is a living & kicking example of that: this new band´s been founded in 2018 by three highly esteemed professionals – André Andersen, Jonas Larsen, Henrik Brockmann – initially bonded through their original band Royal Hunt; all participated in numerous bands/projects, all received various accolades from the industry, sold tons of albums and toured the world countless times.

​About N’Tribe:
Contemporary Classic Rock outfit from Copenhagen, Denmark. The band was founded in 2018 by these three old-time friends and top-notch professionals: André Andersen, Jonas Larsen and Henrik Brockmann – all mated through their original band Royal Hunt. 
In the spring of 2018 the label asked the guys to get together and re-record one of the original/unreleased songs from RH´s debut album (for the re-issue of the classic) and they had so much fun doing it that – all of the sudden – the idea of N´Tribe was born. 
 
All of the guys are huge fans of those “70´s Golden Years” yet very well aware of the fact that it´s 2018 outside… so to unite these two things was the main goal from the start. 
 
Their idea behind N´Tribe is relatively simple:

​Crow’s Flight is a melodic metalband that is inspired by many different music styles because of the different musical backgrounds of the band members (Heavy, Gothic, Rock, Trash) and the musicians have decades of live and studio experience.

Crow’s Flight was founded in the early spring of 2008 by band’s former lead singer Crow (CH), guitarist Marko Vehmanen (FIN) and bassist Michel van Beekum (NL). First it started as a project from three nations – Switzerland, Finland and Holland. ​We are happy to announce that long waited second album called The Storm is finally done. After the debut album “Calm Before” release in 2011 band has made some big changes to line-up. A Former singer Crow (CH) has been replaced by Finnish hard rock singer Markku Kuikka (Kenziner, Status Minor etc) and Timo Rajala (Ex Ancara) found his place behind the drums.

An energetic brand of metal guaranteed to get your blood pumping and head banging. Since 2011, Hitman have been unleashing their unique brand of whiskey rock assault across Eastern Canada and beyond, from pubs to festivals. With 2 EPs under their belts and new music in the works Hitman is poised to continue proving why they are one of Canada's best upcoming acts.

Live 105 fm's Road to Warped Tour winner in June 2016, the band received the grand prize of an all expenses paid performance at Vans Warped tour in Darien lake, New York, USA on July 14 2016 with Sum 41, New found Glory and Yellowcard. 

Performing the first Maritime Metal and Hard Rock Fest in 2013, they followed it up the next year by headlining the festival which included an improv jam with John Dunsworth of the Trailer Park Boys and then returned to headline the festival in 2016. 

June 2017 Hitman took second place in the annual Q104.3 FM Home grown project and recieved $3500 in equipment from Long & Mcquade Instruments. 

Rob Halford of Judas Priest wore a Hitman T-shirt onstage during a performance in Halifax in 2015. 

Hitman has performed more than 250 shows since 2011 in markets such as NS, NB, NL, PEI, ON, QC and NY, USA, playing with many notable acts such as Silverstein, Metalian, Zaum, Skull Fist, The Agonist, Black Moor and more.

Hitman have been putting the final touches on their first full length album set too release summer 2018 and just filmed the first music video for Curtain Call to be released early May 2018. ​
